Chris

4th para.

I remember getting my first proper word processor - an early MS Word on floppies - and inflicting the marker of my assignments with esoteric punctuation just because I could.

I decided with that psalm that if the response was essentially triplets I would do that where feasible in the verses.

I don't have the timing skills to successfully sing Gelineau, but as your midi shows, they really do have attractive melodies.

It's worth mentioning that these were originally published (in English) back in 1963, before we had an English lectionary, so almost all the responses published for the lectionary are later compositions. While books with the original Grail text are still in print, I don't believe that any with the complete original full psalm and antiphon music (as included in NLP) are. A selection is included in the psalm section of the Worship, 4th ed. hymnal, all be it, with Revised Grail 2010 text.

Outside of the responsorial psalm in the Mass, it is common practise to include a doxology as the final stanza when a psalm is sung/said as part of the Divine Office or a proper at Mass.

I have to ask: where is this M dash you speak of? I can't see it anywhere!

The Gelineau psalms are quite interesting. It's the same thinking as behind I Am the Bread of Life. You have the bars and you fit the words in. Just make sure it's not too fast so it gets all garbled.

I first heard the Gelineau psalms in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2Byzz9CHgI
I first heard it and fell in love with the alleluia - Did some digging and found it was Dom Anthony Gregory Murray.

The Gelineau psalms paved the way for the responsorial psalms we have in Mass today.
Really cool history to look into.
