The Lord is Kind and Merciful (Psalm 103) Tom Booth

I was looking for a setting of Ps 103 for this weekend and after listening to some less than impressive songs came across this one by Tom Booth, which I felt had a good feeling to it. You can hear his version here. It can be purchased at OCP.

My version aspires to his easy laid back approach. I managed to get the chords using Band in a Box’s interpretive skills, which are usually haphazard but in this case were pretty much spot on.  I still sent off for a second hand Spiritandsong Vol 2 on Abebooks which arrived today and made a few minor corrections from that.

Refrain
The Lord is kind and merciful.
The Lord is slow to anger
and rich in compassion.
The Lord is kind and merciful.

Verse 1

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
forgetting not his benefits,
forgetting not his benefits.

Refrain

Verse 2

As the heavens are above the earth,
great is God’s kindness towards us.
As the east is far from the west,
he has put our sin from us,
he has put our sin away from us.

Refrain x2 (key change)

The Lord is kind and merciful.
The Lord is kind and merciful.

    Hi,

You seem to be somewhat of an expert on Catholic Church music. I have had and used As One Voice Vol 1, 2 and for Kids and lately Next Gen in both my Parish and Catholic schools I have taught in.

I have both the books and CD’s. The music for ‘The Lord is Kind and Merciful’ in Vol 2 is totally different to the recording and while I like Jeanne Cotter’s version, I would love to obtain the music for the recording version. Although I’ve trawled the net for years, I’ve never been able to find who the recording is by, thus being unable to track down any music. I am quite adept at playing and writing music by ear but would prefer to do the right thing and buy the correct music if possible.

How strange that Willow, when they published it, didn’t bother to match the written music to the recording.

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated…I must be the first person in Australia that wants to find it.

    Cheers

      G’day Peta

I have only heard the snippet at AOV and commented in my blog posting that is was not the tune for AOV 2/66.

I don’t have CDs but from your note it appears the same error has occurred in them.

I had another listen to the snippet at AOV but can’t place it. I’ve often found that composers have more than one version of a Psalm setting floating around.

My best advice is to get in touch with Monica O’Brien at Willow and ask her. I’m sure she would be delighted to point you to where the music can be purchased.

      good luck

      Geoff

    Thanks Geoff,

As it happens, between posting the question and reading this I did find a sample copy on the net as a ‘full score’ version. It seems it is available from Willow (AOV).

….so I shall chase it up. Thanks Peta
