At the Cross Her Vigil Keeping

Looking at the Easter liturgies that were put up in the comments, I found many songs I’d never heard of that I went looking for. I’ll be interspersing them with backings from Voices As One until they run out.

This one is also called Stabat Mater and is a very old text with nearly as ancient a tune.

The text is by Jacopone da Todi (13th century) translated by Edward Caswell. The music is by Maintzisch Gesangbuch (1661). Hymnary has all the information and various public domain versions of the sheet music. There are minor variations in the text and I have used the one in Voices United.

I could just do traditional songs with appalling MIDI church organ sounds like I have in the past, but I wound up with a dodgy cello instead.
