Salve, Regina / Hail, Queen of Heaven (Gather Australia 546)

I’ve never posted this Marian Hymn from Gather Australia and I doubt I really should because BAND IN A BOX CAN’T DO CHANT.

The text is Latin from the eleventh century translated in the twentieth century by John Selner.  The text and melody line is at Hymnary.

My backing is the melody line and is all wrong because it’s regular.

Latin chant

  1. Jesus is the Lord. Mary is human being she is not a god.

  2. Ryan says:

If you want a modern arrangement, Trevor Thomson took the chant and modernized it for Spirit & Song. It switches between 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 quite a bit, but it’s not chant.

  3. Mary says:

It’s the Hail Holy Queen – different from Hail Queen of Heaven.

Whoopi Goldberg did quite an energetic modernization in Sister Act, as well. I’m not sure if anyone’s been able to use it in liturgy with a straight face since then!
