David Haas wrote this gentle song as a reflection on the parable of the lost son in Luke 15. He suggests it for the mass where that is the reading, but also for reconciliation and healing services.
The refrain has the assembly singing as the healing voice of the Father. The verses go high enough to ask for a cantor.
