It is certainly a great piece of music and I had no trouble following the lyrics. The lyrics do sound a bit old fashioned , but it is still a very worthy hymn.

Thanks for the background, Gio.

I don’t doubt the backing may have the wrong feel – often the chords I use are semi-educated guesses as there are no arrangements I can find that include them and Band in a Box must have chords to function.

A stiring melody made even better with the organ giving it depth and strength. Very suitable for an entrance hymn.

It first came out in the 1960s – I first saw it in the old Living Parish Hymn Book. It’s the only hymn in the Graduals section, meant to be sung before the Gospel at a Low Mass.

When the old Living Parish Hymn Book was revised, a couple of hymns were switched out, but this hymn stayed at 24, but the section was changed to Bible Services.
I like the alternate refrain means you can still sing it during Lent, and the Alleluia seems nifty on its own…

The backing track is a bit off here. This is one of he hymns in Richard Connolly’s modal era where he was in the Dorian mode a lot. (Think Help of Christians and All You People Praise the Lord)

You are supposed to use the listed Gospel Acclamation for each week, rather than a generic one such as this. The provision of a Lenten option suggest that this was meant to be a Gospel Acclamation. In times past there was a little more latitude.

It could be used as a general hymn but not to welcome the Gospel.

I like it !
Simple melody to follow and had no trouble matching the lyrics to the melody.
It does sound a bit old-fashioned but who cares? Congregations will find it easy to pick up and sing along.
