Hello Geoff

Hope things have settled down a bit, and your music-making working more happily

Delighted to be able to tell you that our Mayfield Mass has now been approved by the Department for Christian Life and Worship of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

We continue to post the psalm settings week by week. The next Sunday's is on the front page, but we try to keep two or three weeks ahead. Guitar chords we are still working on (sorting out the software), but it shouldn't be long now.

Best wishes

I've put Kate's score and your chords for it together - hope we get a chance to try them out.

For the rest of the Mass, we're using some traditional Irish language pieces, some of Liam Lawton's Glendalough setting (the vocal range of the Gloria is too wide for the congregation though) and some old-translation settings too. Some music leaders in the parish are not at all keen on the new translation and are in no hurry to implement it :-)

I like the familiar tune idea a lot, but the text we have been given is a dog to set to any music. What do you use for the rest of the mass?

Kate's is a fine piece of music and I hope it doesn't get lost in the avalanche of settings.

Thanks - that sounds very sing-able, unlike quite a few arrangements I've heard.

My current parish is really struggling with the Gloria: almost all the settings are long and hardto learn, compared to what most of our people are used to. A friend has set "almost" the Glory to God to Beethoven's ODE TO JOY (http://www.godsongs.net/2013/01/glory-to-god-peace-to-people.html), and we're trying it at the moment. Not totally liturgically correct - but a lot closer than some of the alternative that people are fond of, and the familiar tune is really helping people get over the idea of "more complicated" words.
