I suspect that’s true in a lot of Oz and NZ. We had a sister working here (Ireland) who had spent a lot of time in NZ: she was very surprised when she asked for “Come to the Water” and the musician launched into the Foley version!

For good or ill, Frank Andersen’s song of the same name holds sway locally and my daughter who sang with us yesterday was lamenting that choice.

Thank you, Geoff. We have in the past swapped pieces and let the priest know just before mass. The person in charge of the words just scrolled through the discarded songs. Usually a swap means a solo. But once we had a request from a parishioner (who did not enjoy the newer music) for an old favourite. Everyone in the congregation sang from memory without music. That was very special.

I wish them well. With sympathetic song choices, as above, and a bass uke (aka guitar) I’m sure they will minister well.

With all the ukelele groups about now, they may be the only musicians left in a few years. I have a baritone uke that sounds almost as good as my travel guitar and is in the same tuning, but I don’t think I’ll try my banjo uke at Mass.

One of the benefits of being on the team that picks music is you don’t get a massive Christopher Walker piece thrown at you! I played this morning with my little acoustic travel guitar and would have my hands full with that one.
