His State Was Divine

Father Frank Andersen wrote this adaptation of Philippians 2:6-11 and Emma’s parish used it over Easter.

This is not one I’ve heard before but it has such a specific use it should be considered. All his sheet music is available here at very reasonable prices.  The melody line compilation I bought years ago for $5 (I think when he visited) has gone up to all of $A 7.50!

My backing takes it very easy and is essentially 2/2 rather than the 4/4 in which it is written. The text is largely straight from Paul’s letter and I include it below due to its obscurity and without the exclamation marks of which he is so fond:

Refrain:

His state was divine, his gift was himself.

Poured out for us he became like us

And was more humble still even accepting death,

Death on a cross.

  1. God raised him high giving him that name

That goes beyond all names: Jesus, the Lord.

2. Let every voice proclaim in joy:

Jesus is Lord. Glory to God.
