At Last, All Powerful Master CWB II 225

To finish up Catholic Worship Book II, as all the chanted psalms are beyond me, are three settings of the Nunc dimitis.

The first version of the Canticle of Simeon has the text from The Grail and is set by the wonderful Sr Jennifer O’Brien. The words are here.

My Soul Rejoices in God, My Saviour CWB II 212

I’ve skipped a lot of worthy chanted psalmody and arrived at Owen Alstott‘s pleasant setting of the Magnificat.

The text is here. OCP sell the sheet music.

I would prefer a female only choir here, but this is lovely nonetheless:

O Light Serene of God the Father’s Glory CWB II 195

This is yet another version of Phos hilaron in CWB II so you not lacking for choice for evening prayer here. This is Stanbrook Abbey’s translation. The tune is by Alan Rees and called PHOS HILARON.

The text is here.

My backing is just all the notes thrown at BIAB – I did not work out the chords because it looked like each note had a different chord.

Streaming Mass update

Many thanks for all the suggestions on streaming masses and I’ve since found there are many more out there.

The Redemptorists prerecord an informal mass in England, that I think will be a backstop for me.

What I went with was Donna’s suggestion of Holy Spirit Parish, Cranbrook, which streams live on Facebook at 8.30am Sundays from suburban Townsville. My wife and I and the grand-daughter joined some tropical birds and a hundred or so other virtual parishioners -and for nonrational, symbolic reasons I think it has to be live – for their morning mass.

When they sang “Jesus Is Risen Today” as an entrance I felt like Easter had started at last. The Emmaus Gospel is great catch up if Easter seemed not to happen this year. The mass was sung but, sorry, I forgot to note the songs. I could not place the mass setting either but it was fine and there were no technical issues.

It was a normal suburban mass with a heart felt homily and actual music. That is my liturgical language so I will be happy to be part of their virtual community unless our local parish starts streaming.

I hope everyone finds a virtual home that speaks their liturgical language until things are back to normal.

Music for the Third Sunday Of Easter Year A 26th April 2020

Our music team is not selecting songs as we have no liturgies to facilitate, but I picked some suggestions that I would have put forward based on past liturgies and the the fact that I like the Haugen song. We have done Tony Alonso’s song “Emmaus” before and that would have probably been selected ahead of an unfamiliar hymn.

Entrance: Jesus is Risen (O’Brien- Ogilvie) AOV NG 82

Gifts: Christ Be Beside Me (Quinn) tune BUNESSAN

Communion: Come to the Table (Burland) AOV NG 33

Thanksgiving: On the Journey to Emmaus (Haugan)

Recessional: Hearts on Fire (Mangan) AOV NG 62

O Gracious Light, Lord Jesus Christ CWB II 194

This is another version of Phos hilaron for evening prayer, this time translated by Francis Bland Tucker and set to JESU DULCIS MEMORIA.

The text is here. This lousy backing explains why I am not doing more chant backings.

I’m coming to the end of the first volume and will skip a lot of the chanted psalmody, but that it is no reason for you to overlook this fine liturgical treasure chest.

I gather a lot of these texts were delightfully appropriated for Evensong in the Anglican tradition.

Light of Gladness, Lord of Glory CWB II 193

I am up to evening hymns for the Divine Office now.

This is a translation of a c4 Greek text Phos hilaron, by Christopher Idle.

Jubilate, who own the copyright have graciously put the lyrics up here.

It is set to QUEM PASTORES LAUDEVERE a c14 German carol.

I had to figure out the chords from the keyboard accompaniment, which always makes me cranky, to make a backing on BIAB.

CWB II bring this down to Eb (thanks be to God).

The Lord Will Visit Us in Peace CWB II 187c

This is another setting for the Benedictus with a text by Owen Alstott set to a tune by Malcolm Archer.

I can’t find anything about it on the internet so for those with CWB II who want to sing along, here is a backing:

Bless’d Be the God of Israel CWB II 187b

I’m just dipping in and out of the songs for the Divine Office. 187a is chant:

… so I have skipped to James Quinn’s paraphrase of the Benedictus (the Canticle of Zechariah).

The text is here (page 3). CWB II sets it to KINGSFOLD.
