We were very lucky to be able to have Easter Tridium services as Brisbane came out of a three day lockdown on Thursday. We are now having to book individual seats and wearing masks at mass, but there was a full church with music and singing (lots of Schutte) and we have much to be thankful for. We have a seminarian for the year and we suddenly have lots of incense. I have bad nasal allergy and I may need to keep wearing masks just for that, but I’m all for liturgical symbols used to their full. The sprinkling rite, for example, is a useful wake up during the long Vigil mass and also has something to do with Baptism I believe.
I was caught up with other goings on and missed the meeting for song selections. It’s time to switch the Mason’s Mass of Praise of Glory (we only use two masses) and we will use the Celtic Alleluia as a Gospel Acclamation because we know how to sing the response. Amanda McKenna’s Psalms have become a valued fixture here.
Entrance: Alleluia No 1 (Fishel) AOV 1/15
Psalm 117 (McKenna)
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.
Gifts: Without Seeing You (Haas) AOV 2/158
Communion: Bread of Heaven (Manibusan-Hart)
Thanksgiving: O Sacred Flame (Marshall)
Recessional: Jesus Is Risen (O’Brien- Ogilvie) AOV NG 82
I’ve only got a few songs left in the Guitar Accompaniment Book from OCP c2005. I’m tidying up 2007 additions that I haven’t blogged elsewhere. I’ve also skipped the Psalms and some service music.
This wins the prize for the longest title if nothing else. “The Kingdom Calls Us to Repent” is for Lent and “We Feel the Weight of Sadness” for funerals. The lyrics were written by Harry Hagan. It is set to the c16 tune WINDSOR attributed to Christopher Tye. The music is pretty funereal, which suits.
This is the latest installment in my quixotic quest to created my own update to AOV 1,2, & NG from songs that were published after the closing of the canon. I’m looking through the As One Voice digital platform looking for songs that are singable and usable liturgically.
This is another Peter Grant song, and his hallmark is singable melodies. This is a song with an obvious use for the Procession of the Gifts but with a third verse for weddings and blessings.
I was taken by the instrumental snippet at Willow, which you can listen to while you deciding how many copies to purchase. I made a backing on Band in a Box to sing along to.
1 Lord, we have gathered in the grain, warmed by sun and blessed by rain,
To make the bread we offer you.
Bread, symbol of the life we share, will be blessed, offered in prayer,
And truly be Jesus, the Bread of Life.
Take this bread, gift of our labour.
Take our lives, life giving Saviour. Bless our gifts!
2 Lord, we have harvested the vine; gift of earth, poured forth as wine;
Work of our hands offered to you.
Wine, symbol of the love we share, will be gift beyond compare,
The saving cup of our Redeemer.
Take this wine, gift of our labour.
Take our hearts, Jesus, our Saviour. Bless our gifts!
3 Lord, we have gathered on this day, here to celebrate and pray,
Pray for your grace, pray for your blessing.
Here, we proclaim the love we share, joined as one, our hearts declare
That we will love, always and truly.
Bless our lives, in joy and sadness,
Bless our love, source of all gladness. Bless our gifts!
This is an apophatic hymn with a text by Genevieve Glen and set by John Foley. We sing the mystery because it can’t be known and so the Trinitarian third verse makes perfect non-rational sense.
Roc O’Connor wrote this hymn for Lent, Reconciliation and other situations emphasising the need for conversion. The lovely oddness of the text stems from its origin with St Augustine.
One of the reasons for this blog is that I don’t sight read music. If I see sheet music the quickest way for me to get an idea of how it goes is to make a simple backing on Band in a Box.
Some of the sheet music on the new As One Voice/Willow site doesn’t have a sample of the music that would let me know if the tune is singable.
This Erica Marshall blessing song is one of those, so I made a backing based on the preview on the site. I hope it helps you decide if this is suitable to your needs.
Erica Marshall did a lot of work years ago arranging Frank Andersen’s songs and has two masses of her own for sale at Willow, Missa Santa Clara and the Mass of God’s People. We use her “O Sacred Flame” a lot. She also has six songs in AOV 1&2.
This joyful song by John Foley is a hymn of praise to the Lord for morning, evening and anytime prayer. It is singable but I’d drop the capo 2 frets to reach the high notes.
As usual you can find the text in the preview provided by OCP and they can sell you the sheet music.
This delicate song from Barbara Bridge is for Lent or Anointing but really is a song of praise as well. The text is from Joel 2:12-13 and 2 Cor 5:20-6:2.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
