We Walk His Way / Ewe, Thina G3 517

This is a lively South African song translated by Anders Nyberg. I always wonder at these copyright claims on traditional songs. It has an Easter theme but that should not limit its use.

The text is at Hymnary. I can’t find it at GIA except for handbells, but it is in John Bell’s book “We Walk His Way” available at Wild Goose.

There are many potential vocal lines in this song. I’ve picked two major lines for my backing.

Be Not Afraid (aka Nebojte Se) G3 516

More TAIZE from Gather 3rd ed, this time for Easter. The words and music are credited to the Taize community, but other sources say it is Jacques Berthier as usual. G3 has English, Czech, Polish and Croatian verses. The Czech version was the original.

GIA only seem to have the handbell version for sale as a single sheet, but they do sell it in this collection. The text is in the preview at Hymnary.

In Manus Tuas, Pater (aka Into Your Hands, O Father) G3 513

Gather 3rd ed. has this TAIZE chant as one of its selections for Good Friday. It is an adaptation of the evening prayer and is also suitable for Lent and Palm Sunday. The tune is by the community.

GIA will sell you the sheet music here and the text in Latin and English is in their preview. G3 has the text in Spanish as well.

Prepare a Room for Me G3 504

Gather 3rd ed lists this as for Holy Thursday, but it has more general Eucharistic applications. The text is by Herman G. Stuempfle Jnr. It is set to SOUTHWELL. They suggest the verses should alternate between cantor and assembly, but I can’t see why.

GIA provide the text in this preview although there it is set to a different tune.

This Is My Example G3 503

Francis Patrick O’Brien gets a lot of selections in Gather 3rd ed. This is his Holy Thursday song and it goes forever (twelve verses) so you’ll get lots of foot washing done. Is it a lovely gentle tune.

There is a simple melody line for the refrain, so I assume that is for the assembly, but there is a harmony line to stop the monotony of thirteen repetitions. The verses have some differences in their tune and counter melodies, so it could be quite the production for a choir.

You can purchase the sheet music at GIA and they have the text there in the preview.

My version is just the main melodies.

Glory in the Cross G3 501

In my survey of Gather 3rd ed, I am in the section of music for specific celebrations and I’m just doing those songs that I haven’t already blogged from other collections.

Holy Thursday gets this song that faces stiff opposition from Dan Schutte’s classic. The text has a refrain which is from ICEL’s Rite of Holy Week, and verses trasnlated from the c6th original written by Venantius Fortunatus. It is set by Steven R. Janco.

The text is in GIA’s preview where you can also purchase the sheet music.

I like the tune a lot, but the verses are meant to be a capella, which does not help BIAB. In the absence of written chords I put in some extremely approximate ones and dropped the backing back to just some strings for the verses. There is an instrumental lead in to each verse to smooth the key change.

Hosanna G3 499

This is a Scott Soper song for Palm Sunday. The assembly does the chorus and the verses are call and response with a cantor. It would still sound OK with the assembly doing it all – I don’t think the repetition is an obstacle here.

GIA will sell you the sheet music and the text is in their sample there.

My backing is a bit odd. My excuse is that the new BIAB2021 is buggy and has been freaking me out so maybe just use it to learn the tune.

Palm Sunday Processional G3 496

Gather 3rd ed. continues with music for specific celebrations with a song that is what is says, by Rory Cooney.

It is singable and meant to be call and response between the cantor and assembly. That makes some sense if you are processing from outside, as the assembly’s part is repetitive and memorable.

The text is at GIA in their preview, where you can purchase the sheet music.
