Song of My People

This is a song by Leo Watt that he says would work for entrance and as a recessional and I think he is quite correct.

The original says “gather in St Eugene’s name”, his home parish, but I’ve made the suggested substitution.

You can purchase the sheet music following the instructions here.

1

The song of my people will surely be heard,

When two or three gather in God’s holy name.

The song of my people I will not ignore,

For your life and your giving will be blest evermore.

2

The song of my people will live on and on,

When you work together in God’s holy name.

The song of my people is my joy to hear.

In the hearts of the faithful, know that yes, I am near.

3

The song of my people will rise up this day

When you pray together in God’s holy name.

The song of my people will echo through time.

Know that your life has value, know that you, you are mine.

4

The song of my people will surely be heard,

When two or more gather in God’s holy name.

The song of my people I will not ignore,

For your life and your giving will be blest ever more.

No Greater Love

Leo Watt describes this as a “meditative hymn for any occasion”, but especially Good Friday.

You can get the sheet music following the instructions here.

1

No greater love the world has ever seen

That our God lived among us to share our pain and dreams.

God willed his only Son should die and rise again

That we might know our worth and the wonder of God’s love.

2

No greater love the world has ever seen

That a man lay his life down to save humanity.

And when we see is cross and when we see our sin,

We see what we have done and the wonder of God’s love.

3

No greater love the world has ever seen

That a son did his father’s will and knew his hour had come.

And we who weep today, who suffer many ways,

Gain strength to bear our cross through the wonder of God’s love.

Listen to My Word

Leo Watt has written a song about the word of God that might work as a gathering song, especially for a Liturgy of the Word. He adapts Psalm 105, John 5:24 and Isaiah 55:11 in his text.

It is from the collection “Precious in My Eyes” and details on buying the sheet music are here.

Refrain

Listen to my word, it will light the way for you

And guide you as you go on your way through life.

Listen to my word that is spoken just for you

And know I am your God and you are my friends.

1

If today you hear my voice, harden not your heart.

And do not close your ears and ears;

It is I that speak to you.

2

Sometimes I will call your name;

Something you must do.

Be silent, then and you will hear

The message that I give.

3

Blest are those who hear my word,

Do the will of God.

For others will discover me

Through what you say and do.

You are precious in my eyes.

From the time your life began you are mine.

I have called you by your name,

I have shared my life with you,

I have loved you with an everlasting love.

1

If you sail upon the seas I will be with you.

If you fly into the heavens I am there.

I will be your rock of safety in a stormy troubled world

And a light for you in the darkest night.

2

I have seen your every thought and understand you.

I have known you when you sit and when you stand.

I will rest my hand upon you on your journey through your life

And wherever you go I will be there.

3

For I know the roads for you I have before me

And a dream, of a future full of hope.

I will bring you back if somehow you have wandered far away,

You will find me when you search with eyes of faith.

Mass of Welcome

I saw at Pray Tell a post about a new mass by Julian Revie called the “Mass of Welcome”. He is an award winning Australian-Canadian Catholic composer with an impressive body of work. I have listened to the mass and the first impression is of considerable ingenuity setting the poorly written text.

You can access the music by logging into Cloud Hymnal, although I found it rather annoying and less than intuitive. While I could see the piano arrangement I could only download the melody line. There are no chords on the music.

There are streaming music tracks there to learn to sing the parts of the mass.

I’m not doing the whole mass at present, but I’ve done a backing for the Gloria. I fed the music on the site through BIAB to get the chords and tried to see if it could survive my arrangement.

Love Is the Gift

This is the last song in Brian Boniwell’s album ‘People of the Resurrection”. I have another wonderful album of his to go through, but I’ll do a couple of other songwriters first before I get back to him.

He based this song on 1 Cor 13:4-7. He works from Paul’s lesson on love to Eucharistic concerns, especially in the second verse.

He suggests it played capo 2, but I’d just bring it down two semitones to reach the long held D’s as C’s instead.

I think we are singing in the voice of God, because we can’t be channeling Paul in the second verse.

You can hear a snippet at Apple Music. This page tells you how to get the sheet music.

1

Love is always patient, love is always kind.

Love is never boastful, fault it will not find.

Love will make excuses, love will see no wrong,

Love is patient, enduring all that comes.

Refrain

Love is the gift, the greatest gift of all.

Given to the humble, given to the small,

Given to the mighty, given to the poor,

Broken as the bread of life, Jesus the Christ the Lord.

2

Take this bread and eat it, take this cup and share.

Let its love transform you, strengthen you to bear

All that life will bring you of sorrow and great joy,

Take my presence with you everywhere.

3

Do not seek for riches, do not seek for gold.

Do not find your treasure in what is bought or sold.

Set your heart on Jesus, and follow his way,

Let the Spirit lead you every day.

Like a Cedar of Lebanon

The title comes from Psalm 92:12.

The righteous will flourish like palm trees;

They will grow like the cedars of Lebanon.

Brian Boniwell adds his own reflection in the verses looking at the Word, the Spirit and the water of life.

This page tells you how to get his sheet music album “People of the Resurrection”. You can hear a snippet of this song at Apple Music.

Refrain

Faithful and strong, like the cedar of Lebanon,

Gifted with life through the people of God.

You shall grow strong like the cedar of Lebanon,

Nurtured with love in the house of the Lord.

1

Just as the rain falls to water the earth,

My word upon you will bring you new birth.

2

The snow on the mountains, the clear flowing streams,

The life of the Spirit, the hope of your dreams.

3

You shall have rest in the shade of my love,

Listen and drink from the water of life.
