Lord, Make Us Turn To You VAO 307

I’m turning back to Voices As One Volume 2 for the moment.

This is a setting of Psalm 80 by John Angotti in a jazz gospel style.  It will test your cantor.

The refrain for the assembly is singable enough even with a key change.

The sheet music can be purchased at WLP where the text is in their sample pages.

How Majestic Your Name

I think this song’s legitimate sheet music was given away at a conference I attended years ago and it turned up during a recent tidy.

It is by Timothy Valentine SJ and is a paraphrase of Psalm 8.

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA where the text is in their preview. They also have a snippet for listening purposes to get the feel.

This is my backing for learning purposes:

I also rearranged it as a very slow mysterious bossa because I liked the odd chord progression and thought it might sound interesting that way.

The Bread of Life

I found this one when tidying up as well.  It is a gentle song for Eucharist by Michael Mangan with a singable tune and plenty of verses.

The lyrics are on page 16 of this document from Litmus Productions. The sheet music is available in the the collection “Setting Hearts on Fire”, which can be purchased at Litmus.

You can hear a snippet here.

You Have Called Us

I found this Bernadette Farrell song while I was tidying up. It is an entrance song that would find special usefulness with the RCIA.

The lyrics are here.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

A Hymn of Healing for the Church by Michael Herry fms

I’ve got a few bits and pieces posts to do after all the David Haas posts.

I met the delightful Michael Herry briefly at the APMN conference. He distributed this song, the text of which speaks for itself.

1. Here we stand in silent witness to the church we love and name.
Hearing pleas of children’s voices, for our part in sin and shame.
Father we have hurt so deeply; trust betrayed, dark secrets kept.
Now the truth cries out in daylight. Tears of old, now freely wept.

2. Stir in us a deep compassion, firm resolve to heal the past.
Help us understand the darkness, lest again it comes to pass.
Lord we pray for those so wounded, hear the cry of victims’ pain.
Help us seek the path of justice. Help us see the light again.

3. Finding hope in Jesus’ promise, ‘I am with you. Do not fear.’
Striving on through storm and struggle, knowing still our God is near.
Loving God, your mercy send, and like the fires that rake this land.
May new life in wondrous colour, through the ashes bloom again.

4. Repeat 1.
Here we stand in silent witness to the church we love and name.
Hearing pleas of children’s voices, for our part in sin and shame.
Father we have hurt so deeply; trust betrayed, dark secrets kept.
Now the truth cries out in daylight. Tears of old, now freely wept.

He has made the sheet music and lyrics freely available here along with commentary and a streaming music file.

We Are Not Alone

I’ve come to the end of the songs that I hadn’t already blogged from David Haas’s time at the APMN conference.

This is a lovely song and illustrative of all his more recent work that our parishes reliant on AOV 1&2 are missing out on.

This is a song for communion with references to the Emmaus story.  Haas says that he was also influenced by the spirituality of Dorothy Day.

While the verses are for a cantor the assembly has to sing at least the last line, “We belong, we belong to the Lord.”

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA where the text is in their preview.

My backing shows just how good BIAB is at a piano backing, and the bass is great too.

When We Are Weak We Are Strong

This is a recent stand out song by David Haas.

The words pull in various Pauline texts and the song will find many liturgical uses including for reconciliation.

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA, where the text is hidden in the preview.

I thought there might be too much going on in my backing but Haas suggests letting loose all your musical resources here.

The brass quintet is special.

He demonstrates the song here without the bells and whistles.
