In the Power of Christ

I really like this David Haas song but the verses are designed to be sung by two cantors who sing parts over each other and then together that make it somewhat complicated if you just want the assembly to sing it.

It’s a pity because it is one of his best melodies.

The text is in the preview at GIA where you can purchase the sheet music.

My backing only has cantor 1’s part.

It might be better to listen to the two cantors in this clip.

Christ Among Us

I’m still looking at the newer David Haas songs that he showcased at the APMN conference at Perth recently.

This is his take on St Theresa’s prayer.  I like John Michael Talbot’s setting but the sheet music is hard to find and this is a worthy replacement.

The sheet music is at GIA where the text is in their preview.

A Future With Hope

This is a fine David Haas composition, which finds him in full Jimmy Webb mode with the tune. The text is one of encouragement that would suit commissioning and graduation, but might also suit a dismissal song in other liturgies.

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA , where the text is in their preview. It is based on Jeremiah 29:11-14.

Onward to the Kingdom

I’m still doing David Haas songs as a response to his sessions at the Perth APMN conference.

This one is a text for dismissal or Epiphany set to MARIE’S WEDDING.

The tune is, of course, public domain and all over the internet including here. You can purchase GIA’s version at GIA. The text is at Hymnary.

I have a problem with the tune due to an early exposure to Billy Connolly:

That may explain my less than serious (dixieland) backing:

Haas demonstrates the tune here.

God’s Cause

This is a David Haas song based on the writings of Blessed Mary Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger.

It has a touch of the Taize about it with an ostinato refrain over which there are five different tunes sung for the five verses of the text.  The assembly will be happy to stay with the refrain and leave the cantor to handle the verses.

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA where the text is in their preview.

My backing alternates the refrain with the verse and refrain together.

Be a Blessing

I love this song for leaving after Mass by David Haas.

He describes it as a simple song in the folk style but he shows how lovely and singable such a genre can be.

The text is the preview at GIA where you can purchase the sheet music.

I think BIAB shines in this string band arrangement.

Will You Come and See the Light?

I am continuing my survey of David Haas songs that are new to me following on from his recent Australian visit.

Here, he sets Brian Wren‘s text for Christmas and Epiphany, which is available here from the wonderful people at Hope Publishing. There, they set it to KELVINGROVE. I blogged that tune here.

The sheet music for Haas’s setting is available at GIA. His music has a wonderful stillness that would enhance any seasonal liturgy.

All I Have Is Yours

David Haas wrote this gentle song as a reflection on the parable of the lost son in Luke 15. He suggests it for the mass where that is the reading, but also for reconciliation and healing services.

The refrain has the assembly singing as the healing voice of the Father. The verses go high enough to ask for a cantor.

The sheet music can be purchased at GIA where the text is in their preview.

Come, Gather

I am interrupting my David Haas series for a Michael Mangan song.  Considering how well they were getting on together in Perth at the APMN conference it seems appropriate.

This song is being used at a school mass this week where I am playing to bolster the guitar section.

The lyrics are here in a Word document for the collection “1,2,3 God Loves Me”.

The sheet music can be purchased at Litmus, where you can hear a snippet.
