Salvation Belongs to Our God VAO 1/333

This appears to be a venerable P&W vehicle from the 80s. It is by Adrian Howard and Pat Turner, although Hymnary lists them as adapters of the song so perhaps it has a previous existence.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at various places on the internet including here. The version in VAO is Ed Bolduc’s arrangement but I can’t find it for sale at WLP.

There are elements of the song that remind me of Peter Allen’s wonderful song “Don’t Cry Out Loud.” More the feel than anything else.

Rejoice and Be Glad VAO 2/332

This is David Yackley‘s dance track version of the Beatitudes.

The refrain is quite singable for the assembly and while they suggest a choir or cantor for the verses they are only really a challenge of breath.

The text is the preview and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP.

Sadly, I don’t get to use the dance backings much for church music.

Rise Up, My People VAO 2/331

Today I have a song that starts “You viper’s brood” if that’s what you need for your liturgy.

It is by John Angotti and it is heavy rock that only requires the assembly to sing the title of the song in the refrain, with the rest a solo for a talented soloist.

The text is in the sample, here and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP.

Rise Up In Splendor VAO 2/330

This is an epic Aaron Thompson song that answers the question, can you get the “dromedaries of Midian” into a song.

You’ll need a versatile cantor and assembly the can take over the melody line of the refrain through two key changes.

I think it really is a choir piece but best of luck.

The text is the sample here and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP.

This backing was not easy.

Rejoice! VAO2/329

I’m back in WLP’s Voices As One Volume 2 for a while surveying any songs that I haven’t already blogged.  If I skip one I’ve already covered it.

This is Paul A. Tate‘s update of a text by Charles Wesley. Tate wrote the music and added the fourth verse.

This is very singable call and response song, which is an invocation to rejoice… obviously.

The text is in their sample here and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP. It is also in this inexpensive collection.

Love Is the Sunlight GC 855

This is the last David Haas song from Gather Comprehensive I can find that I haven’t already blogged from another source.

This is his setting of a text by Borghild Jacobson. It could be used to gather the assembly or for a wedding.

The lyrics are in the page scans at Hymnary, but you will notice it is there set to BUNESSAN.

Haas’s tune has a touch of the Bunessans about it in any case.

GIA has the handbell arrangement as a single sheet if that’s you’re thing, but I could I could only find in a collection called “When Love Is Found” otherwise.

My backing has chords that I guessed.

Jesus, Heal Us GC 846

I’m nearing the end of the David Haas songs in Gather Comprehensive that I have yet to blog from other collections.

This charming song has a simple singable refrain for the assembly and verses with enough variation to suggest a cantor.  An anointing mass, a second rite, a liturgy in Lent – all these would be enhanced by this song.

The text is here and the sheet music is available for purchase at GIA.

Present Among Us GC 383

I’ve still got a few stray David Haas songs that have eluded me in other collections but turn up in my copy Gather Comprehensive to blog.

This is a Eucharist song with a singable refrain for the assembly in 4/4 that goes to 3/4 for the cantor in the refrain.

As written, you need a cantor, because the verse starts over the last note of the refrain, although I’m sure that two extra bars would fix that. You just have to contend with some high notes in the verse. It is an exquisite song.

The text is in the page scans at Hymnary. The sheet music can be purchased at GIA.

My backing has the assembly and cantor lines separate.
