We Gather As One VAO 1/100

I’m back from a week at beautiful Kingscliff in Northern NSW where the cycle paths are inviting, the cafes are full of wonderful food and you can watch whales from the balcony of your holiday unit.

This is another gathering song, this time by Carol Dinese and Cathryn Howard. The text allows its use as a communion song as well and you can find it in the sample at WLP where you can also buy the sheet music. It says cantor or all but this is fine for an assembly.

The tune for the last two lines of each verse sounds awfully familiar – any guesses as I can’t place it.

Not Alone, But Two By Two

This song matched the gospel the other week and was used at Ryan’s parish.

The words are delightful and are by Carl P Daw. The text is at Hope Publishing, the home of some of the best hymn writers around. I couldn’t find the music suggested there, but I noted GIA set it to MADRID, which works a treat.

You can also get backings for this tune at the amazing Small Church Music site, which even has BIAB files for non-copyright songs.  His BIAB for this one is a hoot in jazz style with his own flourishes and key changes.

Go Tell Everyone (God’s Spirit Is In My Heart)

Ryan mentioned this song in a comment here and Mary’s parish recessed to it recently.

I’ve played it a couple of times years ago and had trouble because the sheet music didn’t match how the assembly had decided to sing it since time immemorial. They improved it a lot from memory and belted it out. It is, of course, THE recessional!

The text is here. It is by Alan Dale and Hubert Richards and Godsongs has all the background on the song.

Bob Sorem’s MIDI file reveals it’s full hurdy gurdiness. (Under “God’s Spirit…”)

My backing was made from sheet music that has evaporated but I think I adjusted it based on how it was sung locally.

The Spirit Sends Us Forth

This hymn is by Delores Duffner OSB and is another from RS’s parish. It makes a fine recessional.

The text is here. You can purchase the sheet music and hear a snippet at OCP.

OCP sets it to AZMON by Carl Gotthilf Gläser but YouTube has other settings.

This is a simple backing to sing along to:

We Gather Here VAO 1/99

Number 98 in Voices As One is an extraordinary song called “We Are One Body” which is also in Spirit and Song so I have already blogged it here.

That gets us to Ed Bolduc’s “We Gather Here” a gathering song for those who’ve sung “Gather Us In” once too often.

It has an odd structure with a long interlude in God’s voice by the cantor between the first and second verses, which are the same, followed by a third verse which isn’t! This might explain why we are still singing “Gather Us In.”

The text is in the sample at WLP where the sheet music can be purchased.

The Master Came to Bring Good News

This song was used recently at Ryan’s parish.

The text is suitable for general liturgical uses but the fourth verse is especially apt for reconciliation and penance.  The text is by Ralph Finn and the tune is ICH GLAUB AN GOTT. The text and sheet music are at the links to Hymnary.

The refrain sounds a lot like Waltzing Matilda.

We Are the Hope VAO 1/97

This is a social justice prayer in a song reminding us that we are the agents of God’s change in the world.

It is by Paul A Tate and has call and response verses.  In the chorus there is a extra melody line for a choir after verses two and three. It could all be sung, apart from the choir responses, by an assembly but it would lose a lot.

The text is in the sample at WLP where the sheet music can be purchased and you can listen to a snippet of the song.

My backing is a little more Latin but the song can handle it.
