Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise

Ryan’s parish is alerting to me to many hymns I don’t know and a lot of them are public domain.  This song has a text by Charles Wesley and Thomas Cotterill was used for Ascension. The music is LLANFAIR by Robert Williams.

The text is at Oremus and Hymnary has links to the sheet music.

My backing is more slightly odd free church organ VSTs plugging into BIAB.

On That Holy Mountain VAO 1/68

Joe Mattingly has used Isaiah as inspiration for this song for liturgy (eg advent) or for a choir.

The refrain starts in unison and then splits into parts for your choir.

The text is at spiritandsong and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP.

Queen of the May (Bring Flowers of the Rarest)

I’d better get the Marian hymns done while it is still May.  This is another from Mary’s parish in Ireland that I suppose everyone but me knows only too well. To my Australian ears impossibly sentimental and kitsch but still culturally appropriate in Ireland, recent referenda notwithstanding.

I got the sheet music to make my backing here. Again, this backing is for my benefit to learn a song that I don’t know. I doubt anyone else needs to learn it.

When Creation Was Begun

An example of inculturation Irish style from Mary’s parish. Some information and a link to sheet music are available here.

Having never heard of this Marian hymn I made a backing for my benefit.

Go Out Go Out

Yola’s parish seemed to have two recessionals on Ascension Sunday one of them being Curtis Stephan’s “Go Out Go Out”.  It is a paraphrase of Psalm 117 in a gospel funk style.

The text is in the sample here and the sheet music can be purchased at spiritandsong.

Go to the World

The recessional at Ryan’s parish for Ascension was “Go to the World” by Sylvia Dunstan.

It has been set to more than one tune but they use SINE NOMINE (links to sheet music are at Hymnary)  by Ralph Vaughn Williams, the tune for “For All the Saints”. The text is here.

Most Wonderful Father VAO 1/67

This is an uptempo praise song that would fit certain liturgies by Ed Bolduc.

WLP subscribers can download the sheet music here, otherwise it is in the “We Are Faithful” songbook that you can buy at WLP.

You can listen to a snippet here.

Majesty

Yola’s parish used this Jack Hayford song as a recessional on Ascension Sunday.

The text is here. The sheet music is available all over the net including to purchase from sheetmusicplus.

My backing overdoes the tympani:

I thought my version was a bit much, but I’m restrained compared to some versions.

I think it works OK like this:

May You Cling to Wisdom VAO 1/66

A gorgeous Steven C Warner choir piece for marriage, RCIA, school leaving etc. It is an adaptation of Proverbs 4.

The text is in the sample at WLP where you can purchase the sheet music and listen to a beautiful snippet by the choir.

My backing is a little faster and has birds in it:
