This is a song I hadn’t heard of until a request for a backing came in today.
What is truly remarkable is that Band in a Box figured the chords out and knowing that makes it fairly easy to pick the notes out and then arrange them on BIAB until the sound is something like the recording and then you have a backing. It still took an hour or so to do, but it is Anzac Day in Australia today and I had the day off. It is obviously easier if you have the sheet music already and if you intend to use this you should go to GIA and buy the sheet music.
This is the Youtube video that I listened to get the tune. I had to ignore the embellishments from the singer and my notes are likely to be approximate.
My backing is 64 bpm and I left the extra bar that builds up to the last chorus in situ.
We are in a run of social justice songs in the second volume of As One Voice. This is by Sydney Carter. The sample at AOV lets you know the folk styling required and also the freedom with phrasing that is used.
1.
When I needed a neighbour
Were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour
Were you there?
And the creed and the colour
And the name won’t matter
Were you there?
2.
I was hungry and thirsty … 3.
I was cold, I was naked … 4.
When I needed a shelter … 5.
When I needed a healer …
6.
When they put me in prison…
7.
Wherever you travel
I’ll be there, I’ll be there.
Wherever you travel
I’ll be there.
And the creed and the colour
And the name won’t matter
I’ll be there.
I’ve had a request for a backing for this Lamb of God. We used to use this Mass but I don’t think it has been updated. The Lamb of God doesn’t change though and this is a backing I made last millennium for it. We usually brought this mass down two semitones but this is the original key.
This is another text by Shirley Erena Murray set to an older piece of music, this time by John Hughes. The sample at AOV demonstrates the traditional sounding tune with a radical message. Use it if you can’t sing “Who Will Speak?”
NB Shirley Erena Murray’s work may be accessed here at Hope Publishing and may be printed as a one off copy. Absolutely no alterations are to be made to the text. Any other use requires permission from the author.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
