Kyrie Litany

This is either a lovely Kyrie for an assembly or a stern test for your cantors. “Have mercy” indeed. Luke D. Rosen used the Sarum Missal for his verses. The 3/4+4/4 setting is marvellous if annoying to program into Band In a Box! It is a new addition in Breaking Bread for 2023.

You could put your choir to work during a second Rite of Reconciliation or find a place for it in Lent.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.

My backing puts the ostinato refrain on one side and the cantor part on the other for learning purposes.

Doing this litany at Gethsemane, as above, would just about done me in I think.

In God’s Perfect Time BB 2023

This is a delightful hymn of consolation based on 1 Peter 5:6 by Dan Schutte. It has been selected for Breaking Bread 2023 and the song is only 5 years old so he is still pumping out the hits.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP, where the text is in their preview. I used that for my backing.

I Love the Lord BB 2023

The next song added to Breaking Bead for 2023 is actually “I Have been Anointed” by Steven C. Warner of Notre Dame Folk Choir fame, but I have already blogged that here. Astonishingly, it is an old WLP copyright now looked after by GIA in an OCP publication … space for amazed silence.

Which gets us up to Paul Inwood‘s recent song “I Love the Lord”. It is suggested for Passion Sunday but really fits in anywhere as a song of praise. Like many of his tunes it goes where you don’t expect, which is his great charism as a composer.

The sheet music is at OCP where the text is in their preview.

Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory (aka Revelation 19) BB 2023

This is a gospel song by Jeffrey La Valley from 1985 that is designed to build up to maybe five vocal lines, so is a choir vehicle for the most part. OCP have selected it for Breaking Bread but so far it appears it will only be in the print version.

The text is here. I found several settings for sale including this one from Hope Publishing. I also found a few amateur choir arrangements that had been put up on the web so I made a backing from one of them. It is a very long one with the main melody repeated throughout and several vocal lines done sequentially followed by lots of space to practice singing them against the main melody. It also is a reggae backing but seems to work.

This is the original:

From Dust We Came, to Dust Return BB 2023

This is a song for Lent with a text by Michael Joncas and set recently by Scott Crandal. It was chosen to be in Breaking Bread for 2023, which is great because the tune is achingly beautiful.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.

Enter His Gates With Thanksgiving BB2023

Continuing on with the additions to OCP’s Breaking Bread for 2023 I have reached Timothy R. Smith‘s adaptation of Psalm 100 for gathering.

The music for guitar has it capo 1, but I’d drop it the half note (at least). It veers from Bb to Ab for the chorus to neatly enhance the awe of “entering his gates”.

The sheet music is available to purchase at OCP, where the text is in their preview.

My backing has a way different feel to his version and I doubt mine is an improvement.

Liturgy Share

Chris Wroblewski commented about his amazing new site but it deserves it’s own post:

I have launched a website (LiturgyShare.org) providing free simple liturgical resources for those interested in traditional style music for the ordinary form Mass including a selection guide for psalms and hymns for Sundays and major feast days. Links are provided to YouTube for my scratchy psalm vocals, piano/organ music for hymns, and singing at other parishes when available. The site targets those with limited resources.

Psalms have been composed specifically for this project and have been in use in my congregation for several months. There are only eight sets of psalm tones for the verses, making it easier for cantors to concentrate on the lyrics as they become familiar with the melodies. They deliberately have a low range (D to high C), and the responses are metered, but chant-like.

I have also provided links to some other psalm sources that follow the Australian lectionary, and show how my psalm tones can be used with Amanda McKenna’s responses (from Willow Publications) and can replace the verses in Kate Keefe’s psalm settings (MusicForMass.co.uk) for those who prefer more contemporary sounding responses.

Hymns are in the traditional style and in the public domain, though I also reference the more important copyrighted (metric) hymns, especially those in MacAuley & Connolly’s “Year of Grace” collection. Yes, you can find all the public domain hymns on many other sites, but the intention is to build a curated collection of hymns specifically suited to Catholic liturgy in the form a digital hymnal. In many cases there are two versions of the hymn: one in traditional language, the other modernised (usually from CWB2 when it’s not copyrighted).

Although too late for this year, all the Advent material is collated into pdfs on the landing page.

Going forward, the Christmastide collection is probably two weeks away and going to be too late for those not flying by the seat of their pants, but my focus after that will be Lent rather than the first weeks of Ordinary Time so that at least Sundays before Holy Week are available after Epiphany.

If you have any interest in this type of music, I would appreciate it you could have a look at the website (even if you, sensibly, have Advent already sorted out!) and return any constructive criticism.

The work that has gone into his liturgies and free hymn books is amazing and unlike CWB II he has versions with chords for guitarists and basic keyboard players. I have never had the privilege of being in a parish where the traditional repertoire is prominent and when you see what can be done with the enthusiasm and talent Chris demonstrates, I feel the absence. I also like his acceptance that many parishes will have meager resources. A combination of public domain, donated and self composed music is an attractive option for parish musicians.

I pray Chris has the time, good health and good humour to continue the good work. Three years passes quickly and his suggestions for Advent Year A will still be there with hopefully as much of the liturgical cycle he can manage. Perhaps the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference should sponsor his efforts (but not interfere!).

Blessed Are You BB 2023

This is another song added for Breaking Bread in 2023 by OCP. It is a collection of musical Beatitudes from Ricky Manalo with help for the music from Jesse Manibusan and was written in 2015. It is mostly English but has Tagalog in the refrain, albeit with alternative English lyrics. The Filipino words are the best thing about the song so if you are going to use it go all in. Otherwise there are a lot of musical settings of the Beatitudes and I’m not sure this is one I’d choose.

Who cares what I like – if you like it the sheet music is at OCP, where the text is in their sample.

I made a backing and the notes follow the version with the Tagalog chorus.

Maybe it is just this version that puts me off:

This is better:

I like this a lot – it has enthusiasm – and they are helping people to learn the song with scrolling chords and lyrics. I could learn to like it with their fine example.

Amen, Let It be Done BB 2023

This is a lovely laid back song for Eucharist by Curtis Stephan that has been selected as a new addition to Breaking Bread for 2023.

The range is a just little challenging and there is a little syncopation and a few triplets but I suspect it is singable enough.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview. I used the preview to make a BIAB backing.

Alleluia, He Is Risen! BB 2023

This is an Easter song from Bob Hurd that is added to Breaking Bread for 2023. It is actually quite new. It has a lot of competition in the rousing 6/8 Easter song area but is singable enough.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.

My backing is more Irish than their arrangement:
