I went back to the modern parish from last week because the bulletin listed their band as the music for the Mass this week. It was indeed more modern (piano, flute, guitars, drum set, a number of singers). The printed worship aids from last week were gone, replaced with lyrics on projection screens. I never realized how much I appreciate having the music (and not just the lyrics) until we sang the gathering song that I didn’t know and still couldn’t really sing even with the lyrics projected.

I’ve only ever been in parishes that projected the words and nothing else.
It wasn’t until I did a course on liturgical music and the lecturer said it was a breach of hospitality not to provide at least a melody line, that the lack of music being a barrier to participation to those visiting or new to a parish was made plain to me. I can only excuse my obtuseness by my lack of ability to read music well.
I don’t know what the solution is, but with everything musical and liturgical being done on the cheap and voluntary around here it is hard to see where it can be taken. If you don’t want multiple copies of pew hymnals with melody line because they won’t have what you are going to play, someone going to have to put notes on powerpoint and that sounds a huge job of work.
