Exsultet: Stop Press

The team leading our joint effort for the Easter Vigil tonight decided to do Liam Lawton’s Exsultet.

GIA still sell it.

This is not an approved text and it should not be sung as a substitute for the Exsultet in the Roman Missal. People who don’t know anything about liturgy and liturgical rubrics should not be allowed to lead music at Mass.

Besides not being permissible to use at the Easter Vigil, it’s a lousy composition.

      As you say, Dorothy.

We did the Alonso setting last year with the approved lyrics, because we had a skilled cantor who could sing it. She wasn’t available this year and the nice people who volunteered this year couldn’t find a setting of the whole thing they felt comfortable doing.

We ended up singing Lawton’s lovely song, which people picked up the response to and sang along with, and then said the whole text of the Exultet.

I know perfectly well what should be done, but pastoral considerations are also important. I felt blessed to have music at all in our small town church.

I hope your Easter was equally blessed.

      cheers

      Geoff

Indeed. We’ve not had a sung Exultet since 2019, because there is simply no-one able for singing it.

Even 2019 was an exception, and the visiting priest used the Bernadette Farrell version set to the Christ be our Light. I’m not sure how well that lines up with the official text, either.
