A New Commandment

I was singing this as a Presbyterian teenager and I still get to sing it at Mass as a grumpy old Catholic.  It is based on John 13:34-5 and is listed as having an unknown author. I’ve noticed that some people sing it twice, some sing the second part twice and some sing the first part twice. You may also note that my miscellaneous pile has a loose grasp of the alphabet.

This is a Carpenters style version. If you can find an old version of Scripture in Song Volume one it is number 12.

For some of these old songs I have taken an old MIDI file that I made on Band in a Box V1 for Windows on a steam driven computer in the Jurassic period and just run it through ProTools to tart it up a bit.

A new commandment I give unto you,
that you love one another as I have loved you,
that you love one another as I have loved you.
By this shall all men know you are My disciples,
if you have love one to another.
By this shall all men know you are My disciples,
if you have love one to another. (Rpt)

    Hi Geoff!
Another one that survived the transition to CWBII.
It’s number 443 in the new hymnal, still source unknown, but listed as arranged by Francis Bartlett (1933-2002) and copyrighted to Australian Hymn Book Co (of course!)
I like your BiaB version – we’ve used oboe just like that, but never thought to put such upbeat drums! Very good 🙂

Hi Thanks, this is a lovely upbeat version. I cam here hoping to find another hymn with similar title. We sang it with guitar backing in the 70’s The lyrics begin By This Shall All Men Know That you Are My Disciples, You Love One Another, And Together You Come To Me. with chorus, Verse; If You Eat of My Flesh and You Drink of My Blood, Then This Life Will be Yours, Life Eternal and True, For I Gave My Life Once, Now I Give it to You, Come to Me.
Please do you know if this is still in print? or online anywhere with chords, Em and Bm C

I just heard from a Julie Evans in the comments on a youtube video that her father, Roy Crabtree, did indeed compose this hymn back in the mid 70s in Wales. Here’s the video in question so you can see her comment for yourself: https://youtu.be/yy7W8avIXIY?si=_DY-z6RZzoGp9KPM

      Thanks Isaac,

Mary at Godsongs, looked at this song some years ago:

… but couldn’t establish Mr Crabtree as the author at the time.

I’m not sure how CCLI and OneLicence can be made aware, so that people can report its use and the songwriter be appropriately recompensed.

This is one of those difficult cases: Julie says the song was written in 1974/75, but I have a published version from New Zealand in 1973. My instinct is that she’s telling the truth, but confused about the dates. But without published versions, it’s hard to know who did what 50 years ago. With the best will in the world, over time, people may have forgotten the finer details of who borrowed what.
