Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! GC449

I’m continuing to look for any David Haas song that I haven’t already blogged from the Gather Comprehensive collection I have. Because I only have a melody line version the chords in my backings may be approximate.

You can join in the joy of the 50 days of Pentecost with this rousing Easter song. Haas has set a typically great text by Brian Wren.  You can find the text at Hope Publishing.

The sheet music for David Haas’s setting can purchased at GIA.

Song of the Lord’s Command GC 432

This David Haas song is for the Mandatum on Holy Thursday.  It has plenty of verses for a lot of washing. Since it is only used once a year it is fair enough to have a singable refrain for the assembly and a more challenging set of verses for a cantor.

My version of Gather Comprehensive only has the music for the refrain so I had to cobble the rest together.

You can find the text in the page scans at Hymnary.

You can purchase the sheet music at GIA. There are descants and instrumental additions to maintain interest for as long as necessary.

I thought this backing sounded OK, but I’ve noticed the bass line is somewhat idiosyncratic so I’m not sure what BIAB was up to.

Return to the Lord GC 415

I’m currently in Gather Comprehensive looking for David Haas songs that I have missed from other sources in the past.

Here, David Haas has used Joel 2:12-13 and Psalm 51 to craft this moving song for Ash Wednesday and Lent more generally. A cantor seems needed as the verses overlap with the  echoing assembly part in the refrain.

The sheet music is available at GIA where the text is hidden in the preview.

My backing adds rhythmic elements:

Music for the Third Week of Easter Year B 14th/15th April 2018

I should have said that we have marked the change of liturgical season by switching back to Mason’s “Mass of Glory and Praise”. We are currently using the Celtic Alleluia as the Gospel Acclamation as we know how to sing the responses, whereas we say them with the Mason mass – I know he has written responses for every known contingency, we just haven’t learnt them.

Entrance: Alleluia No. 1 (Fishel) AOV 1/15

Psalm 4 (McKenna)

Lord, let your face shine on us.

Lord, let your face shine on us.

Gifts: Open My Eyes (Manibusan) AOV 1/166

Communion: Bread of Heaven (Manibusan-Hart)

Thanksgiving: Emmaus (Alonso) AOV NG 41

Recessional: Sing of the Lord’s Goodness (Sands) AOV 1/131

Song of the Stable (aka Chill of the Nightfall) GC 370

My survey of David Haas songs from Gather Comprehensive that I haven’t heard before continues with this Christmas song. The text is by Timothy Dudley Smith and here, set by Haas.

I know we get used to winter symbolism in Christmas songs here in Australia, but I wouldn’t add another English Christmas text here no matter how gorgeous the song. For cold climes in the Northern hemisphere only.

How about:

Heat of the summer, bush fires out of hand.

Letting their light fall hard on the sand …

The proper text is available from the wonderful people at Hope Publishing. They suggest BUNESSAN as a setting and I think that would be lovely too.

The sheet music for the Haas setting can be purchased at GIA.

This is my BIAB backing.

A different setting (BUNESSAN I think):

Another alternate setting (John Horman):

God of All People GC349

This is David Haas song for gathering or Advent that is very gentle and soothing. It does start a bit like “Rockabye Baby”, but the text is fine and it singable, although I’d bring the key down from Ab to G at least.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at GIA.

Here’s a BIAB backing to sing along to for learning purposes. The chords are approximate.

This site discusses the song and has a nice version to hear.

People of the Night (Gather Comprehensive 346)

I’m jumping from OCP to GIA for more David Haas songs.

I enjoyed blogging the songs he used at the Perth APMN conference last year, which covered his more recent songs. I have already looked at everything from AOV 1&2 and Gather Australia and from his “Table Song” collection and some that have come up in liturgies over the years, but found a treasure trove of Haas songs I haven’t heard before in my copy of Gather Comprehensive 2nd ed 2004.

I only have a melody line edition but that hasn’t stopped me finding chords in the past even if they are a bit approximate at times.

This is an Advent song of some charm. The second verse has tropes that relate to the Northern Hemisphere, which I would omit in Australia.

The text is at Hymnary and the sheet music can be purchased at GIA.

A Tasmanian Triduum

My peregrinations found me in Hobart for Holy Thursday and Good Friday and back in George Town today for the Easter Vigil.

We were within walking distance of St Joseph’s Church in Hobart and attended there for two well organised, well attended and most effective liturgies.

The music was:

Holy Thursday

We Come to Your Feast (Joncas)

Table Song (Bates)

Now We Remain (Haas)

Let Nothing Trouble You (Farrell)

Servant Song (Gillard)

Eat This Bread (TAIZE)

The Last Supper (Wylie)

Stay Here (TAIZE)

Stay With Me (TAIZE)

Good Friday

Stay With Me (TAIZE)

We Sing the Saviors’s Glory (Schutte)

My God, My God (Hurd)

Behold the Cross (Hurd)

My People (Andersen)

O Sacred Head Surrounded (Hurd)

Jesus Remember Me (TAIZE)

Now the Green Blade Rises

Were You There.

I’m always pleased to find out about the liturgical choices for music at other parishes.

Maranatha GAB 308

This is a robust song for Advent by Gerard Chiusano. It’d got a nice flow and seems singable enough.

I’ll give the OCP book a rest again for a while and pick up on something different after Easter.

The text as here and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

I made my backing more percussive.
