Lord, You Give the Great Commission GAB 302

This is another stirring recessional, this time by retired Anglican bishop, Jeffery Rowthorn.

The wonderful text is at Hope Publishing.

It is set to ABBOT’S LEIGH, which I have blogged here.

It is also available at OCP.

A choral arrangement is for sale at Hope Publishing.

Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service GAB 301

I’ve blogged the text here.

OCP has her set the text by Albert Bayley to HOLY MANNA, which I have bogged here.

You can purchase the sheet music at OCP if you wish.  I note they also set the text to BEACH SPRING.

Either way it makes a good recessional, with your pick of rousing tune.

Catholic Worship Book II for Australia

Paul Inwood’s review at Pray Tell got thinking about this collection again.

I haven’t purchased it yet and while I am less attached to the liturgy team locally than I was, it does not appear we have a copy in the parish either, more than two years after its release.

I’ve been to a session on the collection at a conference, looked at the included material and followed the debate about it and I’m not still not convinced. It is no doubt comprehensive but it appears to include little that is vital, different or new and short of top down imposition I wonder whether it will become the standard the Bishops seem to want. “As One Voice” or “Gather Australia” still appear to be the default sources in Australia.

Since I am frequently wrong and in need of education and correction I would be interested in hearing from parish musicians, especially from the suburbs, who are using the collection and what value it has added to their local liturgy.

Lord of Glory GAB 297

Tim Manion has made the unusual link of a text based on Song of Songs with bluegrass music. I can see it used as a gathering song.

Cantus Mundi have the text. The sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

Lord of All Hopefulness GAB 296

I’ve blogged a more recent setting of this song here, but the GAB has the version set to SLANE.

The text by Jan Struther is here.

It is a lovely sung prayer.

I’ve already blogged the tune here.

It is public domain but OCP sells the sheet music here.

Slighty odd singing:

Much better:

Lord Emmanuel, Come GAB 295

Continuing my survey of the Guitar Accompaniment Book from OCP c2005 is this powerhouse Advent song from Peter McGrail.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.

Mary at Godsongs has posted about the song here.

It is meant to be Allegro but my electronica version might be over the top.

Probably too slow:

Still too slow but with more heft:

Lord, By Your Cross and Resurrection GAB 294

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song by John Foley SJ from back in the seventies. He based it on Philipians 2:6-11. The refrain used to be one of the memorial acclamations.

It’s a bit slow and has held high D’s, but it is rather charming and very suitable for Easter liturgies and communion generally.

OCP sell the sheet music here. The text is here (scroll down).

Worthy is the Lamb

The Kid’s choir at Ryan’s church sang this Hillsong derived song by Darlene Zschech yesterday.

The text is here. The sheet music can be purchased online including at praisecharts.

I have three books of theirs that I have bought at second book sales but I am loath to delve too deeply.  Hillsong is not my favourite Australian export.

This is a slow burn P&W vehicle that maybe has a liturgical use.  It is from the “verse/chorus/same verse/ chorus/chorus/coda plus interpolated repeats of the title” school of songwriting. I’m sure there’s a Disney song buried in the tune somewhere but I can’t place it.

BIAB had some fun with the slow build.

Look Beyond GAB 293

This is a song for Eucharist by Darryl Ducote of The Dameans based on John 6. It looks like it might have been used for a fraction rite in less prescriptive times, but is fine for communion generally. It sounds great as a solo or performance piece with lots of harmonies and descants. I suspect the assembly would be best to stick to the melody portion of the refrain.

The text is at Hymnary.

The sheet music is available at OCP and GIA.

Mary at Godsongs has looked into the background of this one for us.
