Miracle of Grace (Bread of Life)

Ryan’s parish use this Eucharist song by Curtis Stephan that is new to me, but seems in high rotation in the States if YouTube is any indication.

The verses are fiddly and might need a cantor or at least well trained assembly. The refrain just needs the syncopation police to leave the building and all should be well.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

This is Curtis Stephan’s lovely original recording.

Come to Us, Creative Spirit (Gather Australia 434)

David Mowbray wrote this text, here set to Richard Proulx’s tune CASTLEWOOD.

GIA appear to have replaced “in this holy house” with “in your Father’s house” in the second line. The text is at Hymnary courtesy of Hope Publishing, where they note its alternative setting ANGEL VOICES.

It can be purchased at GIA where they have a snippet for listening purposes.

My copy in GA has no chords but fortunately there are chords in Together In Song.

My backing struggles with the irregular metre. There is, of course, no irony in a hymn to artists rendered by a computer program.

God, Whose Purpose Is to Kindle (Gather Comprehensive 704)

Ryan’s parish used this song with a text by David E. Trueblood last Sunday and it has such a cracking set of lyrics I thought I should mention it.

The text and melody line are at Hymnary, where it is noted as “Thou, whose…” and “Christ, whose…” as well as “God, whose…”

It is set to Beethoven’s “Hymn to Joy” and has such lines as “overcome our sinful calmness” and “our tranquillity forgive” so it would be a rabble rousing recessional or a song for Pentecost.

How Long, O Lord (Gather Australia 433)

This is a John Bell song based on Psalm 13 set to his tune NEW THIRTEENTH.

The music in GA does not have chords , which is the same as the copy I have in Heaven Can Wait.  Now as far as I can tell the whole song is Dm except for one bar of G, but why not tell poor musical ignoramuses such as myself that instead of making me think.

The text is in the preview at GIA where you can also buy the sheet music (still no chords). It is meant to be slow and bluesy with a cello backing as exemplified by the sample music at GIA.

I couldn’t manage that so my backing has a sinister slide guitar instead.

Bell comments:

Sometimes we have to call on God’s care, because we have been made redundant, victimised, lost out in love or have been hurt by people close to nus. At such times the words of Psalm 13 can be very helpful.

I’d recommend it as we digest the findings of the Royal Commission.

O Breathe on Me, O Breath of God (Gather Australia 432)

This is a text by Edwin Hatch set to ST COLUMBA. The text is at the indispensable Godsongs site along with suggestion for alternative tunes.

I’ve already posted a backing of this tune here.

Confitemini Domino/Come and Fill (Gather Australia 430)

This is a TAIZE chant based on Psalm 137 by Jaques Berthier.

The text and sheet music are at Hymnary. (Where they say it is based on two other psalms but there you go – it’s loose either way)

My backing includes the flute part.

World Without End (Gather Australia 428)

This is a terrific text by John Bell set to his arrangement of BONNIE GEORGE CAMPBELL an Scottish folk song. There is public domain sheet music for this old tune easily found on the internet.

The text and the melody line are at Hymnary so go and read it, you won’t be disappointed.

I also have it in his book Heaven Shall Not Wait (which GIA says is out of print but still appears to be available at Wild Goose) and I really should sit down and go through all his books – I just get annoyed that I often have to work out the chords for myself. This time, however, the chords are available.

John Bell suggests it could also be sung to SLANE.
