Here I am, in that old place again (aka Sanctify) SNS 14

Continuing with songs from The Source: New Songs, we have this song.  The clip on YouTube by Delirious? looks like nineties era stadium rock because it is I suppose.

This is a P&W song with a somewhat disjointed text but suited to its purpose, a solo performance.

The words are by Stuart Garrard and Martin Smith with music by Garrard.

The text is here and are attributed there to someone else. The sheet music is available on the net including at onlinesheetmusic.

My backing is noisy because they are but it could be done in a more restrained fashion.

Delirious?

Live:

I think we can safely guess that Stu G is the songwriter.

O Bread of Heaven

Ojilong Ronald kindly sent the music selections from his parish including “O Bread of Heaven”.

The text is by Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori.

Hymnary notes a couple of tunes but neither of those seem to be in high rotation if You-tube is to be believed. Rather, as noted at Godsongs, it is usually set to ST CATHERINE (ie the tune for “Faith of our Fathers”). The text is at the Godsongs link as well.

As I already have a backing for this tune and everyone probably knows it anyway I shan’t do a new one.

In His Time

I should keep better notes because I know someone must have put this song in a liturgy posted on the site recently, otherwise I would not have made a backing for it, but I can’t for the life of me find where that was.

It is a gentle song by Dianne Ball that is chant like and nicely simple for endless repetition.

The text is here. The sheet music can be purchased at musicnotes.

Heavenly Father SNS 13

After a break of several years I thought I’d get back to “The Source: New Songs”. These are not liturgical songs but may be of use in other contexts. Being mostly P&W means I get to play with other BIAB rhythms. I’ll probably get to Volume Two of “Voice As One” at some stage but I’ll do a few of these in the meantime.

This is a song of praise from Ian Mizen and Andy Pressdee. The verse in the key of Eminor and it switches to E major in the chorus. The text is at familyworship and outside of this collection the sheet music is also available in a collection called “Family Worship”.

Let Us Be Bread

This is a lovely communion hymn by Thomas J. Porter that I hadn’t heard before, that came up at Mary’s parish last month.

The text is at cantusmundi. The sheet music can be purchased at sheetmusicplus. It also shows up in lots of GIA hymnals – details at Hymnary.

One Is the Body

Frenzy Cool requested this song by Rory Cooney. Hymnary says it is in Gather Comprehensive and it seems nowhere else.  I can’t find it for sale anywhere on the net I’m afraid but it is a GIA copyright so you could ask them. They have a snippet to listen to there.

I’m made a (very) approximate backing based on a Youtube clip. My backing is in Ab rather than A, which I believe is the original key. I don’t think the last line of the verses is quite right but I just couldn’t be certain I had the tune right there. The tune is odd but interesting although the short phrases could make for a staccato sound if you aren’t careful.

The text is at Cooney’s blog (scroll down).

Shepherd of Souls

This is another song I looked up because it was used at RS’s parish.  The text by James Montgomery is at Hymnary and it is sung to the tune ST AGNES by John Bacchus Dykes.

This is a simple organ backing made with BIAB.

You Are My Guide VAO 1/105

This setting of Psalm 25 by Paul A Lisicky is the last song in Voices As One Volume One.

The text is in the sample at sheetmusicplus where the sheet music can be purchased or alternatively subscribers to WLP can download it from there.

My backing is a bit of a fail as the verses are freely sung and that is guesswork on BIAB. The chorus is OK but don’t trust the verses.

You VAO 1/104

Rory Cooney and Claire Cooney wrote this one. I think it is more a solo vehicle than for an assembly, especially with the 6/8 skip towards the end of the verse.

The text is in the sample at WLP where the sheet music can be purchased. Listen to the snippet there, where it is done as a gentle country swing.

My backing is more REM I’m afraid.

More Texts with Familiar Tunes

I’ve seen some unfamiliar texts (to me at least) to well known tunes pop up in the liturgies posted here recently.

As We Gather At Your Table by Carl P Daw which can be sung to HOLY MANNA; NETTLETON or BEACH SPRING

The King of Love My Shepherd Is by Sir H. W. Baker which is sung to ST COLUMBA.

As the Bread of Life is Broken by James Chepponis (text here) sung to Holst’s THAXTED.

While looking into these songs, I came across this fantastic clip of “Come Ye Sinners” to the tune BEACH SPRING. I love the style of a cappella singing they use – I’d never heard of shape note singing.

Here is some more background about this lovely tune. If you were going to use an instrument for this tune how about mountain dulcimer! Love the drones.
