Holy Spirit, Rain Down SNS 18

This is a Hillsong tune by Russell Fragar, which could be a gentle Pentecost song if something in this style is needed.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at various places on the net including praisecharts, or you could just get The Source New Songs.

YouTube overflows with versions of this one:

A Christmas Lullaby by Peter Grant

A lot of people are looking towards Christmas and I know a lot of schoolteachers come to this site, so I have an idea for you all.

At a time when I’d pretty much given up blogging some time ago, Peter Grant the Australian liturgical songwriter sent me a copy of his lovely song  “A Christmas Lullaby”.

I came across it again recently and made a backing for learning purposes. It is an excellent piece for a choir or school for Christmas.

You can listen to a snippet and buy the sheet music at As One Voice. You can get an idea of the lyrics from the snippet and decide if you want to get the sheet music from that. It would be a wonderful addition to any parishes’ Christmas celebration.

Pan De Vida

There are a few songs with this title and this one by Bob Hurd and Pia Moriarty was used at RS’s parish recently. Obviously a Eucharist song this one has a bilingual refrain as well as a Spanish version by Jaime Cortez.

The text is at spiritandsong and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

My backing is in a jazz mode:

“Who Do You I Say I Am” perform this in a more usual Latin style:

A restrained but still a bit Latin version:

Solo:

MIDI assisted:

Organ:

YouTube has a lot more versions if you are interested -it must be very popular in the USA.

Holy Fire SNS 17

Steve Mitchinson and Brian Doerksen wrote this slowish P&W song, which might pass muster for Pentecost.

The text is here, but I couldn’t find the sheet music for sale on the web so you might have to find a copy of The Source New Songs if you need it.  Vineyard have put up the chords.

Give Thanks to the Lord

This song by Dan Schutte was a recent recessional at RS’s parish. It’s a new one for me and has an odd structure in that every third verse is a bridge. I like Schutte’s work and I think this one is usable with care.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP, where there is a longer sample to listen to than usual to get the idea.

My backing is a little busy but it is spirited as required:

I would avoid the organ on this one as it tends to the hurdy gurdy, but I think other instrumentation would be fine with a delicate touch…see below.

Here, In the Dawning (Proclaim the Favour of God) SNS 16

This song from The Source New Songs is by A. Smith, Johnny Markin, and Chris Bowater.  I don’t usually put lyrics up anymore but this song doesn’t seem well known yet it should be. It’s pretty singable, although you might want to bring it down from G to F, and might even have liturgical uses, Advent springs to mind.

I can only find it for sale in this collection, but The Source New Songs is available for purchase on line.

Verse 1

Here in the dawning of hope, in the wake of a rising wave,

Clear, from the throne of our God comes a strength for approaching days.

We have a house God has called us to build, we have a challenge before us.

Raise up your standard in days such as these, for the year of his favour has come.

Refrain

Proclaim the favour of God.

Make known the justice of God.

Comfort the mourning, provide for the grieving,

Bestowing a crown of beauty.

Proclaim the favour of God.

Display the splendour of God.

Healing the hurting as hope is returning, declaring the day of our God.

Verse 2

Rise, for the light which has come is the glory that shines on you.

See, though the darkness is strong, yet the nations will come to your light.

We have a house God has called us to build, we have a challenge before us.

Raise up your standard in days such as these, for the year of his favour has come.

Refrain

Here I am once again (Pour out my heart) SNS15

A lot of these praise and worship songs seems to have two titles don’t they.  I’m persisting with songs from The Source: New Songs, at least as long as I can put up with P&W songs in general.

Craig Musseau wrote this one and it is a devotional solo piece with no liturgical uses, not that it would claim any I suspect.

The text is here and sheet music can be purchased at various places on the net including praisecharts.

In Faith and Hope and Love TIS 628

Chris’s parish did this song recently, which is another hymn with words by the great Australian poet James Phillip McAuley and music (ARALUEN) by Richard Connolly.

I like the simple and noble texts he wrote and Connolly’s always inventive tunes, even if I can’t reach the Ds.

The text is here (scroll down a little). If you don’t have “Together In Song” it can be purchased in the collection “Year of Grace” at AOV.

Here is a basic backing for learning purposes.

You’ll get a better idea from this lovely version by Cantus Choro I think:
