I think I need a break from the OCP Guitar Accompaniment Book as it’s all getting a little samey.
I’m crossing over to WLP’s Voices As One to look at Volume 2.
It starts with a song called “146” by David Yackley. If he means Psalm 146 it doesn’t seem to match that so I really have no idea about the title. It is to played in a “medium funk” style. It goes too high for an assembly in the verses but the chorus is singable if you can get a soloist for the rest. WLP doesn’t seem to have a downloadable version of the sheet music, but they do sell the CD that has this song called “Offering”.
I made a backing and got to press the funk button on BIAB for the first time in a while:
I can’t find the lyrics anywhere so if you don’t have the Voices As One collection yet listen to this You-Tube clip.
This song is a gentle recessional by John Schiavone. I could imagine its use in a time of hurting for a parish. The sheet music is at OCP where you can see the lyrics in their sample. I also note there its specific use for the dismissal of the Catechumens and the Elect.
This is a paraphrase of the Gloria for children and is still in use in schools who value its usability over strictly following the words. I’ve always heard it called the “Clap Gloria”. It was written in the eighties by Michael Anderson when getting the words right wasn’t as big a deal. It is from his Mass of the Risen Lord.
If you go to his website he has the sheet music, vocal track and backing track available. He rockets it along at 152 beats/min but I think 140 is more comfortable for the kids to catch their breath.
“Give Me Jesus” is a spiritual and the version here has verses 1, 4,5 and 6 as traditional and 3 and 4 by James Hansen. Hymnary have the original text and sheet music. This arrangement can be purchased at OCP where the extra lyrics are in their sample.
I’m not sure verses two and three add much except copyright for OCP.
My backing is more pop than spiritual but does contain the descant.
I haven’t heard Tobias Colgan’s take on Psalm 23 before, but this gentle song is another option if you’ve done all the others to death. Apart from all the shepherding liturgies and it a song for Eucharist, funerals and anointing.
The sheet music can be purchased from OCP and the text is in their sample.
I can’t find anything on You-Tube but you can listen to the original here.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
