This gentle song is used at Yola’s parish. In the Catholic Worship Book, where I found a copy of the music, it is attributed to the Medical Mission Sisters, but was actually written by Miriam Therese Winter who has had a full life indeed as a sister.
The text is here. Hymnary have information on this song including the other hymnals and collections in which the sheet music can be found.
This is another song from Joe Mattingly of the Newman Singers and again is a choir song, this time based on Psalm 104. The refrain has harmonies and the rhythm is swung.
The text is here (scroll down to page 2) and the sheet music can be purchased at WLP where you can hear a snippet.
Listen to the Newman Singers and decide whether this performance vehicle can be adapted for liturgical use. I don’t see why not sans finger-snapping and vocal gymnastics.
Some parishes have a lot of overlaps with our AOV based material. I don’t think R.S. belongs to such a parish as they use lots of interesting songs I’ve never heard of. This song is by M. D. Ridge and was used for Gifts recently. She has written a delightful song using Ecclesiastes and Matthew.
The text is in the sample at OCP and you can purchase the sheet music for download there.
This is the Sunday we celebrate St Peter’s Day at the church I go to – St Peter’s.
Entrance: City of God (Schutte) AOV 1/57
Psalm 30 (O’Brien)
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Gifts: Do You Really Love Me? (Landry)
Communion: Come to the Table (Burland) AOV NG 33
You Are Mine (Haas) AOV 2/2
Thanksgiving: You Are My Rock
Recessional: The Summons (Maule-Bell) AOV NG 149
I’m still not on top of “You Are My Rock” and “Do You Really Love Me”, which are used locally for their association with St Peter. I seem to not be playing that week each year and haven’t had to learn them.
The outstanding feature of Voices As One is the sheer amount of songs especially suitable for choirs. Because it has the leader and songwriter of both the Newman Singers and the Notre Dame Folk Choir, there are more songs here designed for parts than the other collections out there.
This one is by Joe Mattingly of the Newman singers and is in essence a simple spiritual. It could be done like to liturgical purposes, a sprinkling rite obviously, but check out what the Newman Singers do with it in performance mode below.
The two lines of text are in the sample at WLP where you will be charged all of US $1 to purchase the sheet music.
My backing is very simple and restrained and goes through three times then slows down for the end.
I’ve been trying to learn songs from the masses posted here by my kind correspondents. Since my education in older Catholic music is sadly lacking, I suspect I’m putting up songs that everyone else knows, so I doubt these backings will help anyone learn any new songs. I made them simply to find out how they go since I can’t just sit at a keyboard and play them. I’ve made very simple backings on BIAB for these – mostly fake organ.
These songs were used by Ryan’s parish for Corpus Christi. Many are by Thomas Aquinas.
Gathering: All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly
Text by Silvia G. Dunstan. Tune: HOLY MANNA by William Moore.
This is choir piece from Steven C Warner and the Notre Dame Folk choir. It has an intricate four part refrain so if you aren’t up to that it will be less wonderful, but it is doable with a single melody line.
The text is in the sample at WLP where the sheet music can be purchased.
The Notre Dame Folk Choir:
The Notre Dame Folk Choir teaching the refrain then singing:
Jesse had me foxed with her entrance for Corpus Christi called “Come and Worship” by Andy Carter. It is also called “Come and Praise Him Royal Priesthood.” It appears to be a short piece that is repeated at length with Hallelujah’s substituted for the lyrics if needed.
The text is at weareworship where the sheet music can be purchased.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
