Ryan put up his parish music selections last week and they included this song. It is Omer Westendorf’s translation of Ubi Caritas, set to a tune called CHRISTIAN LOVE by Paul Benoit OSB.
The text is here and the sheet music is available at WLP in C which is probably too high unless you have an accomplished choir.
I’m guessing the chords here and I don’t fully understand what time signature is happening here but this is my backing in G.
This is another Ed Bolduc song from “Voices As One” and is a setting of Psalm 138.
The text is in the sample at WLP where the sheet music can be purchased. The snippet you can hear there is a bouncy pop version that teeters towards reggae.
Many of the songs posted here at Easter by commentators were ones I didn’t know because I’ve only been playing since 1997 at churches where the more traditional songs have been largely left behind – no organs don’t you know.
The text is early 16th century by Jean Tisserand translated by John M Neale in 1851 and based on Matthew 28 and John 20. The music is O FILI ET FILLAE – a seventeenth century French tune.
I’m doing backings for these old songs to familiarise myself with them as I suspect I’m one of the few church musician who doesn’t know these songs.
Hymnary has all the details and links to sheet music – it notes this song is in 149 hymnals!
My backing is an attempt to avoid the dodgy church organ VST plug ins and is meant to sound vaguely of the period – such as BIAB can manage.
I’m not sure I’ll get all the songs from Easter that were suggested by commentators here before the season of Easter is over.
Geoff Bullock’s “Refresh My Heart” is a fine P&W ballad but I’m not sure it is a particularly good song for liturgical purposes (please debate). Songs that have lots of “me” and “I” in them are problematic for a communal activity.
The text is here. The sheet music can be purchased at praisecharts.
Number 60 in “Voices As One” is “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High”, which I have already blogged here.
Number 61 is “Lord, You Have the Words” by Ed Bolduc. It is based on Psalm 19 and has many liturgical uses.
The text is available in the sample at WLP where you can buy the sheet music and listen to a snippet of this restrained hymn. The sheet music has lots of harmonies that become more elaborate as the verses progress.
My backing has none of that subtlety and is 80s style pop.
Steven C Warner (of the Notre Dame Folk choir) has set Psalm 29, but the text doesn’t match what is used for Year A Baptism of the Lord so it’s just a choir item really.
You’ll have to get the text from Voices As One or from the sheet music available at WLP.
The Notre Dame Folk choir is coming to Australia soon and holding workshops in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane if you get a chance to catch up with them.
This is a Frank Andersen song that I’ve never played, but is obviously known at my parish as it is the recessional for next week.
I have the music in Scripture in Song: the Music of Frank Andersen MSC. This and all hisother available books and CDs can be sourced here. I don’t usually put up lyrics anymore, but this is a pretty obscure song and Father Andersen deserves to be better known around the world.
Refrain
If the Spirit of God lives in you… Sing to the Lord!
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
