Sing a New Song (AOV 1/80)

This Dan Schutte song has been right up there in popularity with our liturgists over the years. It has held up well to repeated use but runs the risk of becoming a joke when sung without enthusiasm – you should not sing ‘Yahweh’s people dance for joy” as a dirge – it is painful to behold. This version isn’t a dirge at least and has an interesting set of comments that give a depressing snapshot of some narrow minded responses to church songs. There are more than the usual amount of very average versions on Youtube if you wish to seek them out but you might prefer the original, with more horns and flutes than you can shake a baton at here. (It dates from 1972 so give them a break.)

NB Yahweh directive warning – see the new text here.

It can be purchased for download at OCP.

To prevent any chance of not being joyful in my backing I take the speed up just a little to 150.

Refrain

Sing a new song unto the Lord;

let your song be sung from mountains high.

Sing a new song unto the Lord, singing alleluia.

Verse 1

Yahweh’s people dance for joy.

O come before the Lord,

and play for him on glad tambourines,

and let your trumpet sound.

Refrain

Verse 2

Rise, O children, from your sleep;

your Savior now has come.

He has turned your sorrow to joy

and filled your soul with song.

Refrain

Verse 3

Glad my soul for I have seen

the glory of the Lord.

The trumpet sounds; the dead shall be raised.

I know my Savior lives.

Refrain

    Hi! We are the Laoag City Jail Choir, the official inmates singing group of Laoag City Jail, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. We primarily sing during religious services inside our jail and we are continuously looking for music to be used especially when celebrating the Mass. I came across your site while looking for a midi of Sing a New Song Unto the Lord and would definitely want to use it, with your permission of course. The only problem is, do you have an arrangement with only the first verse and the ‘singing alleluia’ portion to be sung twice at the end?
    Hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks!

      G’Day

      I gather you mean the Rory Cooney songs. They aren’t ones I’ve ever used and I don’t have the sheet music I’m afraid, but I can try to make a backing from what I can find out on the net. I’ll let you know how I go.
