The Song from “Heaven Shall Not Wait”

This is a delightful song of hope and possibility, in the midst of real life from the Iona Community. The tune, THE SONG, is by John Bell and he wrote the words with Graham Maule.

Once again it is from the book, Heaven Shall Not Wait, which can and should be purchased at Wild Goose.

It is meant to be played brightly, but I doubt my backing is quite what they had in mind. On the other hand, maybe they could have been dance hit makers.

1 What is the song that circles creation,

Ushering day from night?

What is the song that brings from the past

The hope of a future that’s bright.

Chorus The song is love, greater than pleasure;

The song is pleasure, greater than pain;

The song is pain that finds an ending

As life begins where death has once lain.

2 What is the song that promises freedom

Where liberation is a dream?

What is the song that says, with conviction,

People are more than they seem.

3 What is the song that speaks of recovery

When hope is ebbing away?

What is the song that leads to discovery,

Bringing new insights each day?

4 What is the song that tells how tomorrow

Can be both different and great?

What is the song that drowns the refrain

That life is the servant of fate?
