Music for Advent 2025

We have a meeting coming up to look at seasonal songs selections for Advent this year.

What I would like is the same music across the whole month – laying it on with a trowel liturgy wise.

Entrance: Advent Song (Browne/Wood) GA 281

Candle Lighting: Like a Candle (O’Brien/Ogilvie) AOV NG 91 – it has a verse for each week.

Seasonal Psalm: To You O God, I Lift Up My Soul (Hurd) AOV 2/14

Advent Gospel Alleluia to the tune of “O Come O Come Emmanuel”

Gifts: All the Hungry, Come (Doherty)

Communion: Maranatha (Smith) tune O WALY WALY

Recessional: O Emmanuel (Mangan)

It is mostly Australian. I like Paul Mason’s “To You O God” but we know the Hurd one very well.

Don’t forget all the Advent resources at liturgyshare.

One trend that I do not enjoy is seeing lovely hymns, like Veni Emmanuel and O Filii have their tunes repurposed for gospel acclamations.
Especially cos they’re so lovely in their own right, it’s a travesty to chop and change them.

    It just feels so wrong.

      Gio

Growing up a metrical Presbyterian I got used to singing many hymns to few tunes so I guess I’m not that sentimental about it.

These days I’d sing everything to WILD MOUNTAIN THYME if they’d let me.

Chris Wroblewski alerted me to Veni Emmanuel as an acclamation and because of the resonances you love, it lays it on thick that this is Advent. I know it sounds patronising but many in the assembly don’t even know thought goes into musical liturgies so it doesn’t hurt to push whatever seasonal symbolism you can manage.

      cheers

      Thanks, Chris.

I came against resistance at our meeting for music for Advent to using Veni emmanuel for the Gospel Acclamation, so that has been dropped. I still think it’s a good idea.

Our candle lighting will be Advent Chant now and the communion hymn Maranatha was a new song too far so that has gone too.

Thank you for your excellent selections as always.

PS I feel better now that our Vigil on fourth Sunday is being cancelled due to Community Christmas carols at George Town Hall.

      That’s a lot of snow!
Most of Australia is suffering heatwave conditions and bushfires but here in Tasmania far in the south it hasn’t warmed up since winter, but even so there are still bushfires.

      Enjoy Advent.
