Music for Good Friday Year A April 3rd 2026

Our priest likes things quiet and basic for Good Friday, with no music except for Veneration of the Cross and Communion. That is fine with me, except I don’t think we should have communion on Good Friday.

Behold the Wood (Schutte)

Holy Darkness (Schutte)

Jesus Remember Me (Berthier)

At our parishes in Queensland, veneration took ages and I used to prepare lots of music.

Here, even taking into account being small semirural parish, they are very efficient venerators and we got through Schutte’s “Behold the Wood” and that was it.

Would it impolite to tell people it’s OK to take your time in the moment with Christ and that there is no hurry?

This is from a booklet I had scavenged.
Responsorial Psalm: Father, I Put My Life in Your Hands (Douglas Mews)
    Gospel Acclamation: (Percy Jones/NLMB – I assume CWB2)
Collection: When I Survey the wondrous Cross (CWB2 329) [The booklet said Lowell Mason wrote the tune!!!]
    Veneration: Were You There
Communion: God so Loved the World (John Stainer)
    Sicut Cervus (Palestrina)
    O Sacred head surrounded (CWB2 330)

1962 land was same as last year – psalm toned almost everything, Crux Fidelis with the Pange lingua melody, (butchered around to fit), but no sung Pater Noster this year (depressing). We did have the Passion sung to the fancy melody, which was a workout for the priest.
