Lives Brought Together GAB 291

This is a wedding song by Dan Schutte. I don’t go to weddings so I’ve never heard it.

OCP sell the sheet music and the text is in their preview.

Litany of the Word GAB 290

I’m still in OCP’s Guitar Accompaniment Book c2005 and this is Bernadette Farrell’s Litany of the Word for Advent.

The text is here and the sheet music is at OCP.

The assembly answer the cantor “Alleluia” and “Maranatha”for 16 verses, so you might need a couple of cantors lined up.

Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates GAB 286

You can find the words and sheet music of this song, with a text based on Psalm 24 by Georg Weissel, at Hymnary. The translation is by Catherine Winkworth. It is set to TRURO.

You can purchase the OCP version here.

Here is a fake organ backing from BIAB to sing along to.

Let the King of Glory Come GAB280

This is a Michael Joncas song that I’ve never heard before. He based it on the “O” antiphons and Psalm 24 so you would look to a usage in Advent. It is not his best work.

You’ll have to replace all the Yahwehs you find with something ?? “My Lord” – I think it sounds better than “Our Lord” even if that is better liturgically.

The text is here. (scroll down)

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

My backing tries to shuffle the song along.

This recording is pretty ordinary:

This is better with just a guide vocal (Yahweh=Our Lord):

Better again (Yahweh=Our God):

I did a dreadful backing here.

Jesus, the Very Thought of You (Thee) GAB 267

This one has a text attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux and is set to ST AGNES.

The text and tune are at Hymnary as translated by Edward Caswall. The OCP version’s sheet music can be purchased here and although it lists the same translator the text that you’ll find in the preview varies somewhat from that at Hymnary.

I’ve blogged the tune already here.

Jesus, the Lord GAB266

This song by Roc O’Connor is especially appropriate for Palm Sunday and Holy Week. It is based on the Jesus prayer and passages from Philippians and Acts.

It has a fair range and is quite slow which makes it more challenge.  It is meant to speed up and slow down and that can lead to dreadful trouble in the assembly so maybe just stay in tempo. I thought the refrain would work best with the harmonies in place, but some of the solo versions below are excellent.

The text is at Cantus Mundi.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

My backing leaves in most of the harmony in the refrain.

The original…

… is improved on by these wonderful arrangements.
