I have already blogged the version I knew here along with the text. I got the author of the words right, Patrick Brennan, but attributed the tune to George Elvey, which was wrong. Elvey wrote this tune ST. GEORGE’S WINDSOR.
The version I blogged earlier was a tune called REX by William Henry Grattan Flood.
Mary warned me there were several settings of Brennan’s text and at least one other is KING DIVINE by C.W. Rigby.
Hymnary have the sheet music for Elvey’s tune as it is in public domain, but should you wish to purchase the OCP version it is here.
This is another M D Ridge tune, but this time she wrote the music as well as the lyrics.
It is a lovely song of consolation with a specific use for funerals, but with enough Eucharistic references to be of more general liturgical application.
The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where they have hidden the text in their preview.
This BIAB backing was a surprise as the backing was meant to be solo piano but there were extra substyles with drum, bass and guitar replacing the piano. I added some cello in any case.
This sounds hurried to me:
Less hurried:
For no particular reason, other than using the same biblical text, wouldn’t it be great to have a setup capable of using a bit of Karl Jenkins at mass.
This is text translated and paraphrased last century by Christopher Idle from a fourth century Latin text attributed to St Nicetas.
It will fit liturgies such as Christ the King and Holy Trinity.
The text is at Hymnary thanks to Hope Publishing (have I said they are wonderful lately?)
OCP set the text to NETTLETON and their sheet music is available here, The tune is, however, public domain. These words has also been set to RUSTINGTON and REX GLORIAE.
I’ve mentioned this tune in passing before but have never made a backing , so here is some fake organ from BIAB.
This Christmas song wasn’t in AOV and I haven’t caught up with it elsewhere so its presence OCP’s Guitar Accompaniment Book sees it included here.
OCP’s version gives four verses in their (somehow) copyrighted guitar arrangement. This site has the text of seven verses. Hymnary has the sheet music of this public domain traditional carol.
My backing has an extra bar at the end of the refrain to catch your breath.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
