Hail Sov’reign Love GAB 194

This sounds an old song but it is quite recent with a text by Benedictine Father Harry Hagan and music by Randall DeBruyn.

This should have lots of liturgical uses but its language is as “me” centred as a many praise and worship songs.

The sheet music is at OCP where the text in in their preview.

Hail, Redeemer, King Divine GAB 193

I have already blogged the version I knew here along with the text. I got the author of the words right, Patrick Brennan, but attributed the tune to George Elvey, which was wrong. Elvey wrote this tune ST. GEORGE’S WINDSOR.

The version I blogged earlier was a tune called REX by William Henry Grattan Flood.

Mary warned me there were several settings of Brennan’s text and at least one other is KING DIVINE by C.W. Rigby.

Hymnary have the sheet music for Elvey’s tune as it is in public domain, but should you wish to purchase the OCP version it is here.

Great is the Power We Proclaim GAB 190

In my survey of the Guitar Accompaniment Book from OCP (c 2005) I have got to this song by Christopher Walker.

The tune is inventive but I fear the verse might be a bit much for the assembly. There is a descant for the refrain and also the end of the verse.

It is a gathering song that would be wonderful for special occasions and a full choir.

The sheet music is at OCP where the text is in their preview.

Good Christian Friends, Rejoice GAB 189

Goodness, I thought I’d be able to skip a lot of songs in the Guitar Accompaniment Book, but I find there are many that I haven’t blogged after all.

This a Christmas carol set to IN DULCIO JUBILO and the text is 14th century Latin and German translated by John M. Neale in the 19th century.

Hymnary have the text and sheet music, obviously public domain. Originally “Good Christian Men” it is variously corrected to “all” or “friends”.

OCP’s version can be purchased here.

My backing is an Irish jig because it was originally a dance tune.

A more usual rendition:

God Will Wipe Away Every Tear GAB 188

This is another M D Ridge tune, but this time she wrote the music as well as the lyrics.

It is a lovely song of consolation with a specific use for funerals, but with enough Eucharistic references to be of more general liturgical application.

The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where they have hidden the text in their preview.

This BIAB backing was a surprise as the backing was meant to be solo piano but there were extra substyles with drum, bass and guitar replacing the piano. I added some cello in any case.

This sounds hurried to me:

Less hurried:

For no particular reason, other than using the same biblical text, wouldn’t it be great to have a setup capable of using a bit of Karl Jenkins at mass.

God, Who Created Hearts to Love GAB 187

M.D. Ridge wrote this text for a marriage liturgy set to LASST UNS ERFREUEN.

The words are wonderful and the tune familiar so it makes a lot of sense for a service where many will be visitors.

The text is here. OCP sell their version here but the tune is public domain.

I’ve already blogged the tune here.

God, We Praise You GAB 186

This is text translated and paraphrased last century by Christopher Idle from a fourth century Latin text attributed to St Nicetas.

It will fit liturgies such as Christ the King and Holy Trinity.

The text is at Hymnary thanks to Hope Publishing (have I said they are wonderful lately?)

OCP set the text to NETTLETON and their sheet music is available here,  The tune is, however, public domain. These words has also been set to RUSTINGTON and REX GLORIAE.

I’ve mentioned this tune in passing before but have never made a backing , so here is some fake organ from BIAB.

This is better:

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen GAB 185

The comma would seem to be important.

This Christmas song wasn’t in AOV and I haven’t caught up with it elsewhere so its presence OCP’s Guitar Accompaniment Book sees it included here.

OCP’s version gives four verses in their (somehow) copyrighted guitar arrangement.  This site has the text of seven verses. Hymnary has the sheet music of this public domain traditional carol.

My backing has an extra bar at the end of the refrain to catch your breath.

All guns blazing choir:
