Michael Herry fms had two songs placed in As One Voice and Lord, to Whom Shall We Go was pretty much a no-brainer for last week’s readings.
While tidying up I found some more of his songs that I haven’t blogged before including this one.
The Marists have put the sheet music up on the internet here. On the music I have, he suggests that it can be simply adapted for sending forth (“you send”) and intercessions (“we pray”) instead of “we gather”.
This hymn was sung at Ryan’s parish recently and it is another one I’d never heard of before.
You can get the text and sheet music at Hymnary because Hope Publishing is wonderful and will allow you to make one copy of the music. The text is by Fred Pratt Green and the tune, ABBOT’S LEIGH, is by Cyril V. Taylor.
This song almost has more chords than notes, but this is a simple organ backing.
This isn’t a great recording but don’t you wish your church had a trombone choir?
This song from The Source New Songs has a distinct Celtic lilt to it and simple spare lyrics that serve it well.
It is by Jennifer Atkinson and Robin Mark. The text is at We Are Worship where you can buy the sheet music. You can also buy a lead sheet at praisecharts.
This is a Reuben Morgan song from Hillsong that appeared to me to be a song suitable for private reflection. My backing is therefore somewhat reflective.
As usual it appears better known by its alternative title.
The text is here. The sheet music can be purchased at musicnotes.
As an antidote to the superficial found in some P&W songs for which I have been making backings, I am taking solace in hymns by John Bell, this one written with his long time writing partner Graham Maule.
This song would be moving with its fierce and unflinching text and its lovely setting in Bell’s arrangement of YE BANKS AND BRAES without knowing that it was written for a service after the Dunblane massacre in 1996. I find it hard to sing… This is a nice appreciation of the hymn.
The text is here. The sheet music can be purchased at GIA but the tune itself is public domain and available on the net.
I’ve been tidying up and found some music that I had forgotten about.
Since I am overdosing on Praise and Worship music from The Source New Songs at the moment I’m coming up for air and refreshment from the great John Bell.
I don’t know why I never blogged this song when I was doing “Singing Along with Ed” at my previous church some years ago, but it came up because we were watching Bell’s “Singing the Unsung” DVD ( highly recommended) in which he explained the genesis of this text.
It is a wonderful text for a funeral, with his arrangement of LONDONDERRY AIR as the tune. Since the tune is well known, people of diverse backgrounds can sing it at a funeral, the only stumbling block being the range of the piece.
The text is here and the sheet music is available at GIA and in Gather Comprehensive.
You know the tune but I did a backing in any case.
An excerpt from “Singing the Unsung”.
Just because I like the tune, here is the very wonderful My Friend the Chocolate Cake performing Danny Boy.
This song by Mark Altrogge is a mid tempo P&W song with an interesting tune that suits a solo voice. The is little enough to the lyrics but at least it has only one title, which is a blessing.
The text is at Sovereign Grace Music where they have their usual excellent long sample for listening and a free lead sheet. The full arrangement is obviously in The Source New Songs but I can’t find it for sale for download.
My backing was more fun to make than listen back to:
This is a Marty Haugen song requested by Frenzy Cool. It appears to be directed at his Lutheran audience and there is a nice appreciation of the song here. The rhythmic shifts in the last line work well.
The text is at Hymnary and the sheet music can be purchased at GIA and J W Pepper.
My backing is approximate as I guessed the chords.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
