Healing River of the Spirit

I’m still catching up with songs I don’t know from liturgies posted here. Ruth C. Duck wrote this text that is set to BEACH SPRING, the tune of “God of Day and God of Darkness”.

The text is here (scroll down) and Hymnary has details of the song and and its author.  The sheet music is at OCP, along with a lovely sample instrumental introduction.

My backing for this I did a few years ago is not great so I had another go at BEACH SPRING.

Holy Holy Holy! (NICAEA)

I realised looking through some music for liturgy posted here that I never have blogged this hymn that I sang as a child in the Presbyterian church and that is still used.

The text is by Reginald Heber and the tune NICAEA by John B. Dykes. Hymnary have sheet music and information about these gentlemen.

Lift High the Cross TIS 351

Ryan’s parish do this hymn with a text by George William Kitchin, revised by Michael Robert Newbolt and set to CRUCIFER by Sydney Hugo Nicholson.

Text and music are at Hymnary, although my copy in Together in Song has slightly different lyrics eg “Come, people” vs “Come, brethren” vs “Come, Christians”.

This song is all over You Tube.

This Day God Gives Me (Haas)

Yola has suggested a different setting for this text by James Quinn SJ that they do at her parish.  The tune is ANDREA by David Haas.

Cantus Mundi has the text and some You Tube samples. I could not find a download version of the sheet music at GIA but you can get it from sheetmusicplus.

I have a copy in Ritual Song (856) and Gather Comprehensive (749). I have only have choir editions so BIAB helped me get some approximate chords. I didn’t bother with the key change into the final verse.

This Day God Gives Me TIS 642 … and Christ Be Beside Me

These songs are both by James Quinn SJ, both set to BUNESSAN and both have inspiration from the Breastplate of St Patrick.

The text for “This Day God Gives Me” is at spiritandsong where the sheet music can be purchased for download. There is some background and suggestions for its use in prayer at npm. The hymnals that have this song are noted at Hymnary.

There are other versions of the sheet music for BUNESSAN at Hymnary.

I’ve already blogged the tune here.

While “This Day Gives Me” is a new one for me that RS’s parish used at Easter, “Christ Be Before Me” is quite familiar. The text is here and Hymnary have sheet music and a list of the hymnals that have this song.

A lovely harp instrumental of Bunessan

Loving and Forgiving

This is a lovely setting of Psalm 103 by Scott Soper. It appears to be extremely popular in the USA based on the surfeit of You-Tube clips.

The text is here and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

My backing repeats the refrain the first time then gets into the four verses with gradually increasing instrumentation.

There are lots more…

Jesus Is Risen

This Easter song from RS’s parish is to the tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN with extra Alleluias! The text is listed as from “Compilers” 1978 and can be found here. (scroll down)

The music is listed as from Auserlesene Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesänge, 1623. Sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

The tune I have blogged elsewhere but this one has extra alleluias so I’ve done a new backing.

From Penola’s Plains

Speaking of Holst’s THAXTED, it was used to set a text written by Michael Herry and Geoffrey Cox for the canonisation of St Mary MacKillop.

It’s on page five of the program for her Thanksgiving Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne.

This document has information about St Mary’s time in Brisbane and pictures of the statue of her in the the Old St Stephen’s Chapel next to the Cathedral. Penola is important in her story as well, hence the title of the song.

That’s one reason to visit Penola, the other being the outstanding wine in the Coonawarra district.

Three Days

I’m still going through all the wonderful Easter music that RS posted from their parish.  This one has a text by M.D. Ridge and is set to THAXTED by Holst.

I’ve done a backing for the tune already here and the text and some mildly patronising comments are on this forum. The sheet music with Jeffrey Honoré’s arrangement is at OCP.
