Oh My Strength

This is another lovely Monica Brown mantra from Holy Ground, this time based on Psalm 58.

The sheet music for the whole collection is available for download at her site for $A5.

O my strength, it is you to whom I call.

For you are the God who is my stronghold.

The God who shows me love.

In Quiet and Trust

For this mantra, Monica Brown used Isaiah 30:15 as inspiration for her text.

It is available in the collection Holy Ground, at Emmaus.

By waiting and calm you shall be saved.

In quiet and trust lies your strength.

Thus says your God, you shall be saved.

In quiet and trust, in calm and waiting.

Come to Me

I am working through Monica Brown’s collection of mantras, Holy Ground, and I am finding a lot of musicality in these short pieces.

This one would work at a funeral or during Lent. Some people don’t like us singing in the voice of God, but I think it can work as an assembly especially, and I don’t think anyone can fail to situate the text based as it is on Matthew 11:28.

Come to me all you who are burdened and weary and I shall give you rest.

Come to me as you are and I shall tend to you.

Listen

This mantra from Monica Brown is based on the prologue of the Rule Of Benedict. It is from the collection, Holy Ground.

Listen, the voice of your God is calling.

Listen, the voice of your God is calling.

Listen with the ear of your heart.

The voice of your God is calling.

Speak Lord

This is a round by Monica Brown from her collection, Holy Ground.

I blogged it years ago here.

My backing does not attempt the round for clarity.

Holy Sacred Spirit

I’ve blogged this one many years ago, here, but I’m posting it again in the context of this collection of mantras from Monica Brown, Holy Ground.

This is a lovely song for Confirmation and Pentecost, with the beautiful solo verses over the ostinato refrain being a highlight. You can buy the sheet music for the whole collection for the price of a coffee at Emmaus.

I made a new backing but I’m not sure it’s any better than the old one.

Mantra:

Holy sacred Spirit, breathe Your breathe on us.

Holy sacred Spirit, breathe Your life in us.

Verse 1

Create a new heart in me, oh God,

Enflame my heart with Your love, Your Spirit of love.

Verse 2

Send forth Your Spirit and renew the earth,

The longing earth, the waiting earth, the fragile earth.

Lead Me, Guide Me

You’d think puting up simple mantras would be nice and simple, but not with Monica Brown. Her penchant for changing time signatures every bar makes it rather tedious to make a Band in a Box backing, yet when you hear her sing them it seems so natural.

This one is “Lead Me, Guide Me”, which is a find personal sung prayer, but I note she made a new version as “Lead Us, Guide Us”, which makes more sense for liturgical settings. In the clip below for that version she made it 4/4 all the way through, instead of the 3/4, 4/4 that was making my life difficult.

The updated words are here, and the whole collection Holy Ground, can be downloaded for $A5 at Emmaus.

All Praise, Glory and Honour

This mantra from Monica Brown’s Holy Ground, can be done simply as a personal prayer or expanded into many descants and harmonies as in her clip below.

You can buy the sheet music collection at Emmaus for $A5.

All praise, glory and honour to You, God of great love. x2

Shekinah / The Temple of God

I am working though a book of mantras by Monica Brown called Holy Ground.

This site has background on the meaning of “Shekinah” and helpfully also has the lyrics of this song.

The sheet music can be downloaded for almost nothing at her site, Emmaus.

This being an acapella chant means I had to make up chords for a backing.
