The Lord Gave Them Bread From Heaven

Continuing in Psalms for All Time Volume 3 from Paul Mason, is the psalm from the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, which sounds like a hymn for Eucharist too.

Response

The Lord gave them bread from heaven.

The Lord gave them bread from heaven.

1 The things we have heard and understood,

The things our fathers have told us,

We will tell them to the next generation:

The glories of the Lord and his might.

2 He commanded the clouds above,

And opened the gates of heaven.

He rained down manna to eat,

And gave them bread from heaven.

3 Man ate the bread of angels.

He sent them abundance of food;

He brought them to his holy land,

To the mountain his right hand had won.

  1. As much as I’ll always prefer chant for the responsorial psalms, I think that Paul Mason’s settings are appropriate, tuneful, and superior in every way to the Haugen/Haas “Psalms for the Church Year” series, which just won’t go away!!! It’s a pity no one is recording sung versions for YouTube, as I think it would seriously help their uptake. The instrumental recordings here are excellent, but we need an Australian alternative to Chris Brunelle!

I’m hoping he puts more sung versions up on his Youtube channel. He already has some for Volume Four but not all the published ones are covered yet.

I vote for you to be our Chris, Chris.

USA Chris has singing and playing talent as do the uunnamed singer and pianist on Paul Mason’s videos, but alas …

The most popular videos for specific liturgies on my YouTube channel are my interpretations of Colin Smith’s psalm settings despite having midi generated music for the responses, a capella verses and my scratchy voice. This is the reason I think a more complete collection of Paul’s material would work with someone having a bit more talent (and interest in that style).
