I will be distracted from the blog for a while so I’m going to put up all the music liturgy selections that were decided on at our Music Liturgy team meeting the other day.
There are lots of songs that the team members know that would be wonderful and liturgically apposite but we are being very restrained in adding new material for fear of reducing the participation of the assembly.
We are going to stay with Mason’s Mass of Glory and Praise until Advent and think about about an extra setting next year. There are so many to look at but Mass Shalom is one of the three singable masses of the six suggested by the Australian Bishops and if we do that then we will be singing all of them – Glory and Praise, Mass of St Francis and Shalom. Not very adventurous but practical.
I should mention that the psalm refrains by Amanda McKenna are excellent. We don’t have cantors, so the verses are still read, but with the refrain sung once much of the assembly can pick up the tune and then participate in singing the Psalms. You can purchase the complete set at As One Voice.
Entrance: Lift Up Your Hearts (O’Connor) AOV 1/156
Psalm 32 (McKenna)
Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Gifts: We Walk By Faith (Haugen) AOV 1/63
Communion: Bread of Life (Farrell) AOV 1/164
Be Not Afraid (Dufford) AOV 1/114
Thanksgiving: Without Seeing You (Haas) AOV 2/158
Recessional: Sing of the Lord’s Goodness (Sands) AOV 1/131
This is a lively Easter song from John Angotti that could also be used as a recessional and the verses suit any Eucharist.
The sheet music says it is 136 beats per minute, which is impossibly fast. Bring it down nearer a hundred and it will be fine. The verses are too high and fiddly for an assembly and will require a good cantor.
The sheet music can be purchased at WLP where the text is in their sample.
Peter Kolar has written a proper liturgical song in a samba beat. It would be a great recessional. The version I have in Voices As One Vol 2 is in English but there are Spanish and bilingual versions as well.
The text of all three are in the sample at WLP and the the sheet music can be purchased there as well.
The refrain is accessible to the assembly but you really will need a cantor for the verses as they have fiddly variations in the tune. It is Lenten in character with uses for reconciliation.
The sheet music can be purchased at WLP, where the text is in their sample.
… which brings me to “God Is” by Danielle Rose. Perhaps the ultimate singing in the voice of God song, this is an oddity that has no liturgical use but is a solo vehicle of some charm.
The text is here and the sheet music is available at her site.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
