Christ in the Rubble GAB 98

96 Christ Be Our Light

97 Christ, Circle Round Us

Continuing my survey of the OCP Guitar Accompaniment Book c 2005 is this powerful hymn with a text by Genevieve Glen OSB set to SEPTEMBER HOPE by Tobias Colgan OSB.

The text is in the preview at OCP and the sheet music can also be purchased at OCP.

The tune varies between 6/4 and 4/4.

Christ Be Beside Me GAB 95

This version of St Patrick’s Breastplate isn’t to the tune of “Morning Has Broken.”

This translation is by James D. Quinn SJ and is set to ST ROSE by Laura Wasson. The tune is one bar of 4/4 followed by seven bars of 3/4, which I find a little odd.

The text is here and the sheet music is at OCP.

Children, Run Joyfully GAB 94

This is a Christmas song by Bob Dufford SJ that I have managed not to have ever heard until now. It sounds the sort of Christmas pageant song that is covered by Michael Mangan in Australia.

The text is here and the sheet music is available at OCP.

The refrain is at 96 bpm and the verses at 108 bpm. I haven’t put the descant in.

Child of the Poor GAB 93

Having run out of new music from liturgies posted here I am returning to my survey of the OCP Guitar Accompaniment Book.

90 Celtic Alleluia: Sending Forth (verses for sending forth in the sample at OCP)

91 Centre of My Life

92 Change Our Hearts

This song is “What Child Is This ?” with a song by Scott Soper as a counter melody. It is a rather beautiful song for Advent. The text and some commentary  is here. OCP have the sheet music.

I’ve kept the “What Child Is This?” melody lower so you can hear the newer tune.

You’ll get a better idea from the Notre Dame Folk Choir:

E Na Lima Hana (The Working Hands)

Frenzy Cool asked for this song with music by David Haas. He also wrote the text of the verses but the refrain is by Joe Camacho and David Haas. Frenzy Cool put the lyrics in the comments section here. It is bilingual Hawaiian and English.

The sheet music is at GIA where there is a preview of the song and the sheet music.

My backing is a bit approximate I fear.

With Drums and Dancing

Emma’s parish used this Dan Schutte song that was new to me at Easter. It has an odd meter of a 6/4 bar followed by two 4/4 bars in the refrain that might take a bit of getting used to.

The text is here (scroll down) and the sheet music can be purchased at OCP.

I’m not sure about my backing but I was aiming to follow the instruction to be spirited. I suspect this song needs a choir and would frustrate an assembly. I couldn’t find any You-Tube clips of assemblies having a go at it, so let me know if you have found it work for congregational singing.

I quite like the music in the original but I have my usual reservations about the singing in this clip.

Show Me Your Hands, Your Feet, Your Side

Ryan’s parish used this song for today’s reading about Thomas. The text was by Sylvia Dunstan and set to LAND OF REST which I have blogged here.

The text is in this thread that also has biographical details further down and some severe criticism. The context I gather was to suggest that Worship 4 had lots of dodgy texts in it.

It it actually quite singable in the setting and the singing in the voice of God in the second stanza is only confusing it you aren’t paying attention. She cleverly never mentions Thomas – it is we who always need a sign.

His State Was Divine

Father Frank Andersen wrote this adaptation of Philippians 2:6-11 and Emma’s parish used it over Easter.

This is not one I’ve heard before but it has such a specific use it should be considered. All his sheet music is available here at very reasonable prices.  The melody line compilation I bought years ago for $5 (I think when he visited) has gone up to all of $A 7.50!

My backing takes it very easy and is essentially 2/2 rather than the 4/4 in which it is written. The text is largely straight from Paul’s letter and I include it below due to its obscurity and without the exclamation marks of which he is so fond:

Refrain:

His state was divine, his gift was himself.

Poured out for us he became like us

And was more humble still even accepting death,

Death on a cross.

  1. God raised him high giving him that name

That goes beyond all names: Jesus, the Lord.

2. Let every voice proclaim in joy:

Jesus is Lord. Glory to God.
